blackmagic cinema camera
Posted by Neal Tate on May 13, 2012 at 4:59 amSorry if this already has a discussion.
Does vegas support this cameras recording format?
I think the options are 12-Bit Raw, ProRes, and DNxHDAlso, does anybody have opinions on the BM Cinema camera vs
a hacked GH2 since a hacked GH2 has tried to be considered as “near RED cam quality”Gravitate Media Group (GMG)

May 13, 2012 at 3:32 pmI’m not sure, though I would guess so. However, I don’t know why most videographers would want this camera since I hear that low light performance is not good, for one thing. Far more importantly, Raw video means many, many times more storage needs than what you have with any other camera. You’ll be spending many thousands on hard drives and arrays for a few hours of footage on that camera.

May 13, 2012 at 5:22 pmThe Blackmagic Cinema Camera is going to be a HUGE seller (it was already back-ordeded over 1,000 units during NAB) so I would imagine there will be a way to cut the RAW shots in Vegas – though like Angelo says the files will be huge. I would think it you’d want to transcode the files into something Vegas friendly for editing since the files will have a non-standard frame size in RAW mode. Of course you can shoot in 1080p in either ProRES or DNxHD and Vegas can read both formats.
I think the low-light performance looks really good with the camera and more like an Alexa or RED than a current DSLR. This means if you know how to shoot and light a scene you’ll get great results – if you want to shoot scenes in dark alleys with no added lights this camera and maybe this industry may not be for you 🙂

May 13, 2012 at 8:58 pmHere are the data rates for RAW-1.46 TB per hour. Double that to back everything up, which you absolutely should do, without question. So get ready to spend a few hundred dollars for every hour you shoot, despite the camera itself being pretty inexpensive.

The cost of a single lens could easily double the startup cost.

June 1, 2012 at 2:58 amJust because it can shoot RAW, that doesn’t mean that’s all I would shoot in.

October 6, 2012 at 3:18 pmI’m looking at that camera too, but when you add everything you will need, it gets up there in price pretty fast. The GH2 has been pretty amazing for the price. The GH3 is on the way, $1300 body only. https://www.dpreview.com/news/2012/09/17/Panasonic-announces-DMC-GH3-high-end-movie-focused-mirrorless-camera

February 22, 2013 at 2:41 pmif your shooting a film or working commercially why would it matter the storage space? if your an event video guy then this is not the tool you would use. plus it shoots in two HD codecs one being the prores for all the mac nuts. but vegas pro can handle all these files. but just like the camera be sure your hardware on your editor is up to the job you are using it for. use the proper tool for the job. not a hard science.
