November 7, 2013 at 7:29 pm in reply to: Better snap up those Mac Pro towers while ye mayYou really are the biggest bonehead to show up here in a while. The AMD link you mention along with Apples move to AMD prompted me to pick up a new W7000 FirePro and give it a go. Resolve 10, Mavericks, Mac Pro etc. were not available at the time that article was written and I was using a Win7 64 workstation as was AMD – NOT A MAC!
In all my practical day to day editing, the AMD using OpenCL was sluggish in Premiere CC as compared to my GTX 570, a generations old gamer card using CUDA. So much so that it was not worth keeping the AMD and I sent it back. As Walter alluded to, comparing a W5000 to a K2000 is not a fair fight to begin with.
BMD (Grant Petty) saying the AMD stuff “screams” is great, but he did not say it was better/faster than their recommended multi CUDA card set-ups they require for high-end systems.
“Tweaking” was a just a general term, if you’re saying the FCPX programmers are doing nothing but updating to OpenGL 2 and voila! I think you’re a bigger idiot than you make yourself out to be…

November 7, 2013 at 4:15 pm in reply to: Better snap up those Mac Pro towers while ye mayI pretty much agree, depending on how it’s built. I just helped a friend build a Win64 system for about $2100 and it’s probably faster than any current Mac. All depends on how much you wanna spend – I think it will take well north of 5 or 6 grand to get an uber fast Mac Pro when it ships.
The biggest leaps in computer tech, thanks to gamers, is in GPU speed. I’ve already tested a current FirePro vs. a current nVidia with Premiere Pro CC and CUDA beats OpenCL pretty badly. I’m thinking Apple is doing some serious tweaking to get FCPX to run fastest on OpenCL hence the AMD GPU’s coming. But nVidia isn’t going to sit idly by and let AMD take the workstation world and if the built-in GPU’s in the Mac Pro fall way behind again a year or two from from now I could see folks switching to PC’s not because they want to, but because they have to. Of course this all depends on the work one is doing, the new Mac Pro will probably be more than powerful enough for day to day editing chores for years to come.

November 7, 2013 at 2:43 am in reply to: Better snap up those Mac Pro towers while ye mayWhile I just sold my old 2,1, I’m keeping my 4,1 tower running a while longer – just added Cal-Digit USB 3/eSATA card and adding GTX 780 tonight – about as good as I can get until tube time…

Sadly this happened today just hours before the broadcast – I was able to render a small in to out and FTP the QT to Albuquerque in time to cut it in and encode for broadcast. This would have been really tough with tape…

Tapeless thankfully. We shipped a Pro Res file via drive and sent the 4 reels via Aspera directly to the broadcast center – pretty cool.

Did check the Maximum render quality button in Media Encoder? Makes a huge difference…there is also a 2nd Maximum Bit Depth check box that can also help.

November 3, 2013 at 2:39 am in reply to: Adobe Double-bills, then responds to complaint by triple-billingI had a similar issue when changing to a different credit card they gave me a second account and charged the original card a few days later – I used the online chat feature and assured that the situation was resolved and I would get a refund for the second charge – of course no refund ever issued but at least they are only charging one card…
Maybe they’re using the same service Obama uses for his health care plan?

October 30, 2013 at 9:42 pm in reply to: Need vendor to convert Vegas Pro project to Premiere Pro _ VENDOR FOUND!Thanks for the endorsement Steve 🙂 There will be things like titles or fx from any NLE that may not translate to another NLE regardless of platform. Getting the actual cut from Vegas to Premiere is fairly straightforward but it does help to do it all on the PC first then move to Mac with Premiere project, though my own experience is showing CC is much faster and more stable on Win64 than OSX…

I’m loving it too though for some reason it runs so much better on Win 64 than OSX? I freeze up and crash hourly on a pretty fast Mac with GTX 680 and 32GB of Ram yet rarely on the PC?
Hoping the new rev fixes this weirdness…
