I agree – funny how the X fanboys support the notion that “well, they had to totally re-write FCP for 64bit so…” and we end up with X – which for all it’s cool little features, is really, in the end just a bizarre NLE.

Avid, Adobe, Sony Vegas were all rewritten in 64bit with indiscernible changes to the interface and workflow (other than the obvious gains in performance etc.) – Apple could have done the same with FCP 7 and it would have been a great thing, but they didn’t.

Here in LA among those that I know delivering shows on a regular basis, 7 is still used heavily along MC and Premiere with barely a hint of FCPX. This does not mean we’re not all holding out hope that Apple will still do something great with FCP, but as it sits it’s still not being used like those touting it as being ready for primetime wish it was.

I’m cutting a 1 hour docudrama special in Premiere CC and loving it. We just added the GTX 680 to the Mac Pro and so nice to see everything at 100% with zero renders. Weird I was just cutting in a clip the other day and I thought why wold I ever use an Avid again, CC is so much better than I imagined it could ever be after years of early beta team disasters with Adobe. Only thing I that isn’t great is audio finessing but it’s going to a mix anyway…

Broken record as usual. I get it – you love FCPX – so go use it to get a couple of credits on IMDB.

FCPX is crapware – until Apple puts back TRACKS and other NECESSARY features that are required for professional use it will be nothing more than a novelty. Trix are for kids…

I have to say I completely agree – CC is by far the best NLE I’ve ever used – far from perfect but really solid and very fast. While I keep an open mind for FCPX and hope Apple comes to their senses on the next rev, they’ve got their work cut out for them to top Adobe right now.

I’m on a TV special for the next month and had to install CC for all the Producer’s who were FCP 7 users…it took about 30 seconds for them to get comfy and start roughing out selects, something they could have NEVER done with FCPX which, sadly, has the steepest learning curve of any NLE ever devised. While my suite is Mac, for some reason the Producer stations are all HP and even though none of them were PC users, we could still work in CC and share projects, files etc.

Really need to know your budget but first off, yes, Gigabyte great for Intel. My IVY Bridge system is Gigabyte and I just built a Haswell i7 system Saturday for a good friend using Gigabyte. SSD is a must for C: drive – though a 256GB is fine. Your graphics card is your weak link for sure, there have been more speed bumps with GPU than CPU in the past couple of years and just about every NLE out there including Vegas will use the GPU for heavy lifting – so that’s the one area you shouldn’t cheap out — an nVidia GTX 760 or higher is recommended.

The big problem for me with the new Mac Pro is the use of an AMD gpu – will there ever be an nVidia option or will nVidia give up on the Mac market? As of today, in my own tests, nVidia still kicks AMD’s butt and they seem to innovate much faster than AMD. While I expect Apple to optimize the new version of FCPX for AMD GPU’s, I hate the idea of being stuck with one brand forever.

Not as good as I had hoped based on the marketing at the Apple site…

This will be a problem with Apple from here on out – by going with pre-installed graphics on both the iMac and Mac Pro there will never be the ease of just swapping out a PCIe card and getting an instant boost.
