  • I see you have many transitions on your secondary (upper track) video clips – do these not effect lower video? I was having a problem with some of the transitions effecting both the upper clip and whatever was underneath the transition.

I totally agree – subscription pains aside – CC is the best NLE I’ve ever used – by far. I’ve been using it since June and have cut a variety of projects on it – even taking a couple of FCP 7 & 10 shows and .xmling them over to CC. I’m doing a polish edit this week on a feature film and it’s just great – so fast and smooth and little features like the Scale to Seq and Merge Clips (for 5.1 stems) are so handy.

I start a fairly major TV special Monday which the Producers had planned for FCP 7, I’ve convinced them to use CC and they’re cool with it.

Apple is going to have to do some major fixes in FCPX to get me to use it as a main NLE again – I like a lot about it but so far Premiere has been a much better NLE for my style of cutting and finishing.

For the record I’m running CC on a Mac Pro 4,1 and a newer i7 Win 7 workstation – the PC is miles faster and smoother than the Mac. I’m sure this would change with one of the new uber iMacs or the new Mac Pro.

Are these 1080i files? If they’re 1080p 23.976 I’d try DNxHD 175. Also batch convert them using the Adobe Media Encoder instead.

Works better than ever with Premiere CC . In the olden days of yore it required a special (expensive too) plug-in to cut in real-time in Premiere, though it was editable in Sony Vegas depending on the compression used. Now you can create .avi’s or QT’s to cut on Mac or PC and the QT’s run fine in FCPX though not as well as Pro Res.

In all my tests over the years, Cineform is the best compressed codec I’ve seen – but I’m not getting your bitrate difference. Cineform “HIGH” is similar size to Pre Res HQ (but much better quality) but I usually opt for Cineform Filmscan 1 unless it’s a greenscreen shot – then I’ll go Filmscan 2 or higher.

I’d opt for the new GoPro HERO 3 Black Edition and convert to Cineform Filmscan 1 for post.

All I was talking about was the fact that FCPX will not look any further than the folder it is in when you search – it will not drill down into sub-folders to find a clip, you must do the drilling manually – this makes FCPX’s re-linking almost unusable compared to any other NLE.

Sony Vegas, for instance, will search and index every drive on a system and find every version of the off-line clip no mater how deep it is buried. While it is doing this search it will index the drive and find every other off-line clip and remember where they are.

FCP7 was far better than FCPX at this and I’m sure this problem is on the hit-list at Apple and will be fixed in the next update, even if Bill doesn’t want it fixed…

The really big negative for me with FCPX re-linking is its inability to search in anything but the root folder where the actual file lives – manually drilling down 3 levels to get to a file sucks.

On the other hand Premiere CC re-linking is awesome, fast and it will drill down into however many subfolders necessary until it finds the correct file.

I’m hoping for a pretty substantial upgrade to X – I haven’t used it on a paying gig since CC was released in June and I’m loving cutting in Premiere. The new features coming in October are gonna make the suite that much better. Apple has their work cut for them for sure.

The point with the 4870 machine is that the same exact footage and comp that severely chokes FCPX plays exceptionally well in Premiere CC, which I didn’t expect. Most of the year I’ve been running X on the top of the line i7 iMac with 32GB RAM and Fusion drive plus Thunderbolt RAID and it’s still sluggish at times when even FCP7 isn’t with the same sequence (Event).

My experience thus far with FCPX and Premiere CC is that, regardless of GPU, Adobe has done a better job than Apple is optimizing their software. I expect Apple will make big improvements in performance with the next rev especially when running Mavericks and the new MacPro.

I imagine the next rev to FCPX will be significant and include big optimizations for AMD, OpenCL and the new MacPro. But no matter how they improve FCPX, will it be competitive with everything Adobe has been doing lately? Round tripping to Speedgrade – huge – and something Apple has given up on when they killed the old suite and Color. And how does Apple compete with Adobe Anywhere? Apple tried to compete with Avid Unity in the last decade with xServe and then Final Cut Server and failed and and again gave up.

So if small to large studios start buying in to Anywhere (which seems more flexible and is less expensive than say Avid Interplay) that means Premiere would be their NLE by default. FCPX would have to be so compelling as an NLE that Editors would insist on using over Premiere even if a studio is trying to tell them otherwise and very few Editors have final say on the NLE they use. This means Apple would have to do something about sharing and workgroups again with X. Are they really going to fully commit, longterm to a market they pretty much gave up on?
