The Ivy Bridge processors offer faster rendering than the Sandy Bridge CPUs. I haven’t read much on the new Haswell CPU (I don’t even know if it’s available for sale yet).

Since you’re building a new system, get yourself a SSD hard drive, 512mb minimum, for your system drive. Spend the extra few $$ of the Samsung 840 Pro for your system drive. You can spend less on additional system drives, if you want SSD, like the Curcial M4 (which is superb and cheap).

Regarding the motherboard, any brand name will be fine. I would spend the extra money and make sure it has four 6gb/s SATA ports (SATAIII). Make sure all the hard drives you plop in are 6gb/s as well. Most new drives are.

I don’t think you have to worry about the video card, since the new CPU is where you’ll get your speed improvement.

16gb RAM is where I would go, so you’re thinking is good here.

I should have said I have been using SSD drives for my system drive for quite some time….it REALLY makes a difference!!!

I am asking more about the CPU and motherboard more than anything!!

Really need to know your budget but first off, yes, Gigabyte great for Intel. My IVY Bridge system is Gigabyte and I just built a Haswell i7 system Saturday for a good friend using Gigabyte. SSD is a must for C: drive – though a 256GB is fine. Your graphics card is your weak link for sure, there have been more speed bumps with GPU than CPU in the past couple of years and just about every NLE out there including Vegas will use the GPU for heavy lifting – so that’s the one area you shouldn’t cheap out — an nVidia GTX 760 or higher is recommended.

My understanding is that the GTX series above the 500 does nothing to add in GPU preview speed/quality? That code for Vegas doesn’t handle the newer drivers or something. Saw that on this forum. Also, I am using the one the was recommended for Vegas 11 (in the initial tests that they had run), but yes we are at SVP 12. I am ONLY using it for preview quality, not rendering speed…so is the 700 series still worth the cost? Just wondering.

I run a 128GB SSD and they have been fine, everything else is on or going to other HDDs. Wouldn’t go back from an SSD for anything. I have been using AMD’s for a while now and have had good luck with them, but I just need a better preview than I am getting, I have to work with Preview Full/Half to keep fades from dropping frames, and it is the same with or without GPU on…not sure if it the newer GPU’s are helping or not. Saw a decent improvement with the 8 core over 6, but again, a little concerned with the above driver issue and Vegas not using the horsepower of the GPU’s.

Here is a Tom’s Hardware mega-test of almost all CPUs from late 2012. Ivy Bridge i7 processors are faster at rendering than the older Sandy Bridge processors. Even the i5 Ivy Bridge is faster than many of the i7 Sandy Bridge CPUs.
