simon, i’n not really anti resolve….it’s just for my money and my needs i really can’t justify all that expense. with color i dont need any special graphics cards or a “proper controller” or anything else i dont already have. as for the render times, i simply do it overnight in most cases. 95% of my work is unattended and i always tell clients how long something will take. if they need it quicker or i cant fit them in i send them to the post house down the road where they have to pay 4 times as much for the same job. in this country money talks more than the inconvenience of having to wait for a render….i have never found the render thing to be a problem and in fact on my new mac it’s gotten considerably faster….

that’s never happened to me before in color…think i’ll hold off a little longer on making the switch. besides i’ve just heard that an early pre build of the new fcp suite is hiding in a beasement and color is integrated even more closely…..

i have to disagree with you about people not wanting a blue only mode or some type of control panel on the intensity card…it should be considered a necessity and would make a very good product even better….if matrox can implement it why can’t you guys?

  • dont forget…the main reason for color is to provide a cost effective solution to clients who might not otherwise be able to afford a grading session…and who in their right mind would charge 250 hour for a color suite? any wonder you got pissed off clients….if you wanna charge the big bucks you gotta use the big toys….i charge about 1/4 of that and tell them right up front that its not real time and it has to render and theres no free wi-fi or cappuccino. guess what…i’m busy as hell most of the time with happy clients returning for more! all from the comfort of my little shack by the sea!

  • what alot of crap…i have graded everything from commercials to music videos to features over the last 30 years and having sound in the suite is a bunch of b.s. most commercial don’t even shoot sound, and when we did a cost per time when syncing dailies in the suite it just didnt make sense…… i havent used sound in a telecine suite for years (since the old nagra days) and as for wanting to hear the narration i always have the fcp project open and can listen to the show at anytime if i need to…also if you do a bit of prep up front and actually watch the show first you should know what effect goes where…sound in a grading suite? NEVER! NEVER! besides how can i drown out my clients constant chatter with barbara streisand playing in the background on itunes if i have to listen to a scratch mix of a film..

glad to see that people are waking up to the fact that this new order davinci is really not the free ride home we have been led to believe……i mean seriously, a grading suite for a thousand bucks……just finished comparing the cost of my new color suite to the equivalent resolve suite…with the money left over i can buy myself a nice new laptop as well…..and i’m sure there will be more than a few hints at IBC with regards to apple upping the ante with fcp 2010 or whatever it’s gonna be called!
i would love to have a nucoda or baselight for ultra high end work but 95% of my income is generated from my little color room, and it’s paid for!

they always bring out new macs before the end of august and usually just in time for ibc in amsterdam…faster fire wire and usb 3 might make it also….and better graphics cards…

thats my biggest reservation….as i’ve mentioned before budgets are so tight sometimes the extra i might have to charge for upgrading might make it tough for clients to justify doing the grade…i’ve had instances where even a few hundred bucks made a big difference in the clients budget. it makes for clever thinking tho! when i put my suite together i had to make a lot of compromises…the 36 inch monitor instead of the 48 inch one, the slightly slower mac instead of the super fastest one, less storage space, etc….i even chose to work from home so i wouldn’t incur the extra cost of an office space plus parking and all the other stuff that goes with that…luckily i found a good balance of things and have lots of good work go thru my place that i am very proud of! gonna wait and see what others experiences with resolve for mac are before i make the jump, if i ever do!
