don’t misunderstand me…i’m not saying that a 1000 buck consumer monitor compares to a 6000 high end “broadcast” monitor…i’m really only saying that for the last week i have had the hi end (sony) and lo end (samsung) side by side in my suite and after a bit of tweaking on the cheaper one, i am very very surprised at just how good the samsung compares to a monitor costing 6 times as much….thats a huge difference in price for a small difference in performance…and yes i agree with your comment about plasma and i did have one of those panasonics for testing for a few weeks as well…..it “looked” nice but i agree that it was seldom accurate (especially the way green comes out)….the most interesting thing about this is in the audio world you often have people doing a final check on a set of really cheap lo end speakers, the theory being if it sounds good on those then it will sound great on everything else. i have come to the same findings about monitors lately…there’s accurate, there’s good, and then there’s middle of the road that everyone else sees! just my observation for the week…..and dont forget that a few years back you would have to spend way over 10 grand for a so called “accurate” broadcast monitor just to watch ntsc or pal on..even the early plasma set of 8 years ago only did SD and never looked great and cost a fortune..now we have 2k+ that blows those old things away for next to nothing….it’s become very interesting!

while i tend to agree that something different might work especially given the limited size of the ipad screen, i think that creating an interface that resembles a real world object makes it much more familiar and easier to start using…most colourists recognise and have used trackballs with xyz and rotation controls and virtual buttons that replicate the real buttons on a device make a lot more sense. just doing it different for the sake of being different doesnt always work..skeuomorphism has a place in how we interact with technology and to just throw out what works is not always such a good thing. in the case of the trackballs, the main reason they are so intuitive is that their position relates to the the values displayed on the vectorscope making it much easier to co-ordinate eye and hand control. push the ball to the red and the picture goes red…move to the blue and it turns blue…likewise when you rotate a control to the right you increase a value and left decreases…..if you have ever tried to use the sliders on the davinci interface i’m sure you would agree…..also from what i see this interface can be used to supplement and replace certain parts of the elements control surface so i think it really should try and look like its and extension of that….

i would only release the project files (.drp) after being paid….after i’ve got my cut they can do what ever they want…it’s their show after all.

November 8, 2013 at 12:56 pm in reply to: Another weird design decisions and more bugs in Resolve 10i think you should go and work for them…you always seem to come up with bugs that no one else has even found yet…..the forensic detective of color grading…haha..hope you mailed them to let them know……

or maybe BMD could come up with a nice set of smaller cheaper panels (similar to elements) that could be user configured…i keep looking at my kensington trackball and wacom tablet and thinking is there not a way to create your own perfect user interface….then i go back to my mouse and just get on with it!

October 6, 2013 at 6:54 pm in reply to: DaVinci 10 adds many prosumer oriented ‘all in one” features, while not fixing basic issues.i have to say i totally agree….one of the things that still bugs me about resolve for mac if you’re a mouse user is the fact that the damn wheels are just too small to make fine adjustments….please no comments about get some panels then…they addressed this in the curves section with a really great idea…click on the window and they get bigger so you can actually see what you’re doing! in fact i still think it would be great if you could rearrange the whole user interface as you could with all the older dAvinci products (888 for instance). resizable windows that you can move around would take this app from really good to truly great! there’s way too much jumping around on the screen, especially with the higher resolution displays. you can be working on a node in the upper right hand side of the screen then have to scroll all the way down to the lower left to deselect a wheel for grading…then all the way to the right to move the keyframes around….and forget using scopes if you’re on a laptop because there just isnt any space for them…it’s the little things that still drive me crazy….someone should give these guys a book on ergonomics! one final gripe from me is that i don’t really see the need for resolve to get more edit savvy…its a grading system! leave the editting to the editors….whats next? a 24 channel surround sound mixing plugin? stick to what you do best and make the best damn grading system ever invented! okay im done my rant for now….

just got my new mac at work and it came loaded with fcpx…..looks like the whole place is almost switched over now…..a few hold outs but i think after the next training sessions we will all be x users…the only thing i miss is the export to tape functions but we seldom do tape anymore and there is always black magic media express which is way better than tcp 7 ever was.
