batch export to compressor….i still dont see the sd problem in our day to day work. in fact i wouldnt be surprised to see more imacs with fcpx come through the door in the next few months.

We are mostly hd. Any SD material gets up converted through the teranex. I don’t see that much of a difference between sd in fcp and in fcpx unless you have the output of the video card set to something other than what you are working in. Sd in final cut legacy displayed on a hd monitor never looked very good anyway. We always monitor in the format the original material is in and so far are very happy. Also the cost issue was a big factor. For the price of 6 avids on Mac towers we get 10 fcpx suites and it works seamlessly.

thought i should add my 2 cents for what its worth…the broadcast company i work at has just installed 10 new imacs with fcpx in most of the qc/ingest suites…..the only current limitation is not being able to export to tape directly from fcpx but the whole place has gone digital and we just use the share command to send files to the master server…a second imac is being set up as a dedicated grading suite. most of the staff have been very receptive to fcpx after years of fpc 7 once the training was complete. the move to fcpx made sense because of the huge library of pro res material. as far as going back to tape (which is becoming more and more rare these days), we just use black magic media express…..a simple, elegant and cost effective solution for a major broadcaster in this country.

i just use a programmable button on my wacom for grade off and grade on. i wish davinci would make just one button for this function like color has. push once and grade is on, push again and grade is off. why they had to make it 2 buttons is beyond me. also for individual nodes you can just select the node you want to toggle and turn it on or off.

thanks for the tip…i’ve been loving resolve and the only thing i miss from color (other than the larger curves and 3 way display size) is the ability to apply a final tweak to the output of all the shots…..your trick works great!

hey jeremy…how come you can get away with saying this stuff and when i try i get labelled an idiot or a toad or whatever. 3 cheers for you for proving my points and fighting the fight. keep it up….traded my mb pro for a air and gonna drop the tower as soon as i get the bmd tb interface. going mini for the front end and mini servers for the rest.

glad you think so! read jeremy’s thread below here…he’s saying the same thing and shane is just arguing with him. i’m not implying today or even next month but if you can make a macbook air run this stuff with a thunderbolt breakout box then i see no reason why a mini can’t replace in the near future. i have replaced a 2 year old macbook pro with a macbook air and haven’t noticed any decrease in performance. who’s to say that a super hot mini isn’t in the works? you gonna have egg on your face if i’m right.

craig, once again you and i are in tune with what’s really happening in the industry. it’s just that we are a few years ahead of everyone else. thats what happens when you have forward thinking abilities. it’s a curse i’ve learned to live with!

rolls royce is a niche market, but i wouldn’t mind driving around in one. what is everyone so down on a specialty product? not everyone needs a high end tower for their work. the reason most p.c’s are sold as towers is because they are cheap and people have different uses for them so want to kit them out differently. not every pc tower sold is being used for editing or high end work. people just like to have a tower machine even for gaming. macs towers on the other hand are designed for high end work and represent a smaller (niche) market. put it in simpler terms: if 100 pcs are towers probably only about 30 are used for high end video work. out of 100 mac pros you will probably find around 80 of them being used for high end work. don’t be fooled by the numbers, it’s the percentages that tell the story. also remember that very soon in the next few years many of those pc towers will be outdated and replaced with laptops or netbooks. apple already has a clear lead in this area! then we will see a much different story.
