  • Switching Apple Color to Resolve… Good idea or Great idea?

Posted by Chad Terpstra on August 23, 2010 at 6:41 pm

I’ve been a Apple Color user for a while now but am looking to get into Resolve. Are there any converts here that can vouch for this being a wise move? Apple seems to be dropping the ball in terms of production.

My main push is that I am looking at a project edited in Avid. I can’t see a good workflow using the Apple SW. Is this pretty simple with Resolve? I was told it’s simply a matter of opening the Avid sequence and starting. What about the FCP workflow? Equally simple?

Where can I find more detailed info on Resolve? The website is pretty sparse. What graphics cards does it like? NVidia or ATI?

    All info/advice is greatly appreciated!

    Read about the requirements here.

I’m a switcher myself. Judging by screenshots of the DaVinci interface, I’ll leave the the Wacom behind and get a supported control panel asap. Preferably the Euphonix MC Color, whenever it’s supported. I don’t care much for the Tangent Wave….

[Chad Terpstra] ” Are there any converts here that can vouch for this being a wise move? “

That kind of info might be kind of sparse, since the application hasn’t been released yet.

[Chad Terpstra] “I was told it’s simply a matter of opening the Avid sequence and starting. “

    and managing your media.

[Chad Terpstra] “FCP workflow? Equally simple? “

No. Resolve does not support the same layered sequence interface that COLOR does, and appears to support the traditional CMX3400 EDL protocol. That may change in the future.

[Chad Terpstra] “What graphics cards does it like? “

At this point it is CUDA-dependent nVidia only with Blackmagic Video interface.

It is a different tool, again, its who’s waving the wand, not the wand.

How about getting Pro Export FCP 4 from Automatic Duck, you can export FCP projects as AAF, it works great going to Avid or Quantel Pablo

Just got a job, 5 layers, still images here and there. Sent to Color.. started grading.. done.. sent back.. give to client.

    NO PREP.

I cant imagine having to put that into one layer for prep to Resolve in 2010.

If I could run Color on the same machine for simple jobs like that it would be an ideal situation.

Unfortunately Apple Color will apparently not run on a machine with 2 gfx cards installed. (Resolve will not work without 2 cards)

So.. to use Resolve on a show here and there requires uninstalling cards etc etc.

There’s a scene detect feature in Resolve that will create edits for you. The video I saw showed it working 5 times faster than real time. Since Resolve and MC5 support ProRes now, I imagine you could just throw it in there, start the scene detect, then start grading a few minutes later.

I have finished a few films on apple color. Workflows from 2k log dpx conforms to hdcam sr deliverables to red camera even the 5d. At the office I use the da vinci resolve everyday and welcome it as a color replacement at my home studio. The ability to create looks at home that I can carry to the big iron house is something i have always dreamed about.

The color correction tools / still store / auto tracking/ color trace / lut management/ playout features and render options on the resolve are leaps and bounds ahead of color.

I expect all and more from the future release and welcome the change even with the expensive upgrade of new mac, video cards and I/O cards.

But as Joseph noted its not the car its the driver. If your a final pro wizard and have learned on color you may want to stay with what you know. I however love to learn new gear and play with the latest and greatest tools technology has to offer. Color has many huge issues in my opinion.

Id say main reason to swap from color is speed and result.

You do not use less time for jobs but get better results in the same time as you have more power to play around for better results.

It will make so big difference i think that bit more investments to gear is really not a reason
not to swap. Most stuff you need any way despite color or resolve. Why not go with the faster solution then ?

This was my initial reason to on mac from pc. Stuff got done faster and better as the tools gave us more possibilities in time.

Simply put – the form factor. The Wave is ridiculous in size vs. features, and not least compared to the Euphonix panel.

The Wave looks like an ugly duck in comparison. It can do the job..

I had the pleasure of test driving a MC Color in April, and I totally fell in love. We all want the Resolve panel, no doubt in that, but you gotta be on par with the wallet too.. 🙂 They’re about the same price, but the MC Color felt just so great.

Take a look at the MC Color, and check its height from the table.

And now check the Wave.. I really, really don’t like the size or this.. “big brick” look of it. It’s like a big mothership in outer space.

But then again, who knows when support for the Euphonix panel comes.. I might put the love to MC Color aside and just get the job done with the tools available.

Agree with the size point 🙂

I bet it is bit more tricky to support lan based control panel in software maybe ?

I have my fingers crossed for MC.

Have not tested them side by side.
