Switching Apple Color to Resolve… Good idea or Great idea?

Yes, real time and audio are absolutely huge. There have been so many times where the client’s happy with the color, but then they see it rendered out with audio the next day and all of a sudden they have new thoughts and concerns. Cut that middle step out and give them “what you see is what you get” would save days of my life.

And automatic tracking power windows would save me weeks! I’m hoping the ability to import an externally created alpha channel mask is in Mac Resolve.

what alot of crap…i have graded everything from commercials to music videos to features over the last 30 years and having sound in the suite is a bunch of b.s. most commercial don’t even shoot sound, and when we did a cost per time when syncing dailies in the suite it just didnt make sense…… i havent used sound in a telecine suite for years (since the old nagra days) and as for wanting to hear the narration i always have the fcp project open and can listen to the show at anytime if i need to…also if you do a bit of prep up front and actually watch the show first you should know what effect goes where…sound in a grading suite? NEVER! NEVER! besides how can i drown out my clients constant chatter with barbara streisand playing in the background on itunes if i have to listen to a scratch mix of a film..

dont forget…the main reason for color is to provide a cost effective solution to clients who might not otherwise be able to afford a grading session…and who in their right mind would charge 250 hour for a color suite? any wonder you got pissed off clients….if you wanna charge the big bucks you gotta use the big toys….i charge about 1/4 of that and tell them right up front that its not real time and it has to render and theres no free wi-fi or cappuccino. guess what…i’m busy as hell most of the time with happy clients returning for more! all from the comfort of my little shack by the sea!

Different needs for different clients. With the option of having sound while giving the client real-time playback during a session, they get more of the right feeling and mood once you hit PLAY. It can be the music or the dialogue, whatever makes the ride more pleasant.

It’s not a must, and nobody says you have to use it. Why all this rage?

Maybe he has something against DaVinci.

I can think of a dozen situations just in the past couple months where having audio in Color would have saved me some time.

I’m a little surprised at your statements. Just because final cut color wont play sound it doesnt make it right. I am asked to playback with sound for DI review all the time at Technicolor. Every color suite / telecine bay I have worked in for the past 17 years has had the ability to playback sound.

With todays advanced technology we should be able to do just about anything the client wants.

I’m so glad I will never need to open COLOR again.. :))

Second client in for a drill now on what Resolve can do for his production. He asked a few questions like “how is it compared to Color?” In return I opened a project with RED RAW and 10 nodes. “Can Color do this?” 25fps playback with sound. Client goes “woooooah!!”

I opened another project where I’ve just come to a scene where I need to track the talents head. New node+CPW, adjust colors on the inside and hit the Track Forward button. Tracking goes blazing fast, and the client is almost doing it in his pants.

The client gives me a memory stick with an MP4 file. I convert it to Prores in the blink of an eye and takes him through the Scene cut feature. His smile goes so wide I was afraid his head was falling off. And there I was, grading a proxy of his darling project within 10 minutes after he showed up. WITH SOUND.

Impressed and happy, he quickly gave me the gig and I’m grading on a proxy until he’s coming back to give me the full quality commercial.

Could I sell this to him without sound? Absolutely.

Did he appreciate the fact that he could enjoy the sound design he had paid loads for while watching the grading going on? More than words can tell!
