joe you really make me laugh…..i thought i was the crusty old cynic here but you beat me out again….wanna buy a used vuvuzela…i’ve cleaned all the spit out of it….hope this finds you well and busy and prosperous. i seem to really be getting ragged on by some of the guys caught up in the whole resolve on a mac thing…i think its a great idea and maybe one day i’ll even join the dark side….maybe the jedis at apple will pull out a super duper version color that kicks resolves ass to the curb……oops i slipped into a different time line……that was the alternate reality…hahaha
    “overmark” click click click….

sorry buddy but you not getting the picture here….first up i dont care if i’m grading with a davinci or a toothbrush….when i set out on this adventure with color a few years back i never had any aspirations of it being more than a hobby and i left the big guns world of post production to see what would happen. to my surprise i came to the realization that you don’t need millions of dollars of equipment and hi-tech support to actually create a nice body of work that i am very proud of. it’s not my intention to put down resolve…it is an amazing feat of technical engineering and i am very open to one day giving it a spin. its just that for now, in the market i service and the country i live in, spending money chasing the next big thing is not very practical. often our local producers have budgets that are only 1/10th that of an american budget. on top that any gear that we bring into the country costs almost twice as much as in the states…i just bought a new macbook pro and it set me back $4000 (the exact same machine costs under $2000 in america) i hope i’m getting through to you now.. currently i see no real need to upgrade…and it will cost me a few bucks…$1000 is 2 months salary for alot of people here…and i will need to upgrade my old mac and add some hardware as you mentioned….i would love to drive a ferrari but do i need one? no! which brings me back to the driver…i can bitch about a lot of things that drive me crazy when i use color but it does what it has to do in the hands of a skilled operator….i guess what i’m really trying to say is go ahead and buy resolve if you really need it, but don’t buy into the concept that one thing is better than the other….my old renault takes me from A to B without any hitches….and uses way less gas than that fancy ferrari..will resolve allow me to work faster? maybe! will it make the pictures look better? not really sure! will it put more money in my pocket at the end of the day? possibly..in the meantime i am extremely proud to provide a service to my clients using the tools at hand…

hey thanks for the info…didnt even know i was on imdb…and actually i have been a colorist since 1978 before the first davinci was even released….ever hear of topsy and the awful talking corporate color box…whatever it was called….i had one of the first davincis ever made in toronto….almost half a century ago. guess i have a bit of experience but i don’t wanna pay for the pro version of imdb just for the sake of a resume….unless you know of a way i can update my details for free then i’ll show you a resume as long as a football field….grading is more of a hobby for me now that i’m semi retired in south africa. thats why i love my color suite…hardly any overhead, no staff, only take on jobs that i have an interest in. sure i miss the big bucks but for me its all about adapting and evolving…just look to the dinosaurs for example. i cant wait for the day when every joe film maker out there has a kick ass color correction suite on his ipad….

    hey ola:
just wanted to respond to your questions….first of all if i had the bucks and my clients could afford the hourly rate i would glady have a resolve with panels and all the bells and whistles or even a nucoda for that matter…color drives me crazy some days, but the secret to any piece of equipment is knowing its strengths and weaknesses. a full blow resolve on a mac with all the power you would need is going to cost you alot…don’t be fooled by the $1000 price point! that is only for the software…i have worked in the industry for over 30 years and most of my clients hire me for my skill and not my hardware…they could give a damn what i use as long as they get the best job done for the best price! my mac is 2 years old now and i only have a high end sony lcd display being fed from my infinity hdmi card…i only use a mouse and a bamboo tablet because i have yet to find a control surface that lets me give up the mouse entirely…i hear the new software for the tangent might make it easier. i have very detailed meetings with my clients about how i work and what to expect. i would have to say that 95% are thrilled with the look of their finished product. in fact most of them just leave me alone to do my thing and i just take them a hard drive with the final show on it…so for me at least i have found the tools that suit the artist and am extremely happy with the way i work!

if you dont mind me asking, what are the rates for your suites? its a question i get asked all the time and in the end the cheapest one gets the majority of work….clients just dont have the money to pay for a 2k suite just for grading series….most of them just dont bother if it’s gonna cost them too much…

you are missing a big point here…the cost for the so called pro machines is way way way more than a decent fcp/color suite. again i have to remind you that in this country at least, budget restraints dictate who gets the work and having to wait overnight for a render has never been an issue with me….i have done numerous series and features and doccies on my system and have never missed a delivery date..in fact a large number of jobs dont even have the budget for a basic grade so they just don’t bother…when i do get hired to work on a higher budget job with a more “professional” system, i just laugh because i know the client is being taken for a ride because he has to pay a higher rate for the “pro” system to the post house. sure he can walk out without having to render and maybe, just maybe the job will get done a tiny bit quicker but he’ll also walk away with alot less cash in his pocket….

i have to disagree totally with you…down here in south africa i get just the opposite reaction…
client phones post house A for a quote…nearly drops dead from the price per hour of the so called “professional” systems and calls me up…guess what? i get the job and give them a fantastic product for about 1/4 of the price…..and it gets even funnier….if i get hired as a freelancer at the big post place i still do the same job but the client pays 4 times as much! for the same job…so you see when cost is an issue, as it usually is in 90% of the cases here…color will always win. and do i have to remind anyone here that the true power of any system lies in the hands of the operator!

i love my color suite…….apple and color are like the jedi knights….davinci is a bit like darth vader…maybe they should offer a windows based solution for that true all powerful dark side….”this is not the system you’re looking for”…..you can pass now!

sounds like a lot of stuff to add just to get a grading suite…..all of a sudden that $1000 price point isn’t such a great deal. even if the software was $100 bucks its still gonna cost a whack of cash just to get a basic suite up and running! nice to know some things at davinci still haven’t changed…the marketing side!!!!

why bother with resolve then at all….if you wanna play that game you’re gonna have to fork out alot more cash……i for one am not about to jump into the davinci camp anytime soon…i have yet to see a job i can’t do on color that would be easier on a resolve for the price!..i’m sure to get alot of flack for this comment but come on now….$1000 grading solution on a mac…of course you will need a lot of hardware to support this…and lets not forget about scopes and fast render farms and etc….it’s like the cost of inkjet printers…ridiculously cheap for the machine but the ink will burn a huge hole in your pocket…same with resolve for davinci….inexpensive for the software but you’re gonna cry when you figure in the cost of the hardware…thank you color for being so simple and efficient and easy and fun to use!
