For me, there is no easier 3D application out there than Cinema 4D. Simple to get up and running with, and global illumination looks spectacular when rendering out.

Hey Brendan,
Did you try running ONYX on your machine. Any time I was having strange issues in FCP7, I would run ONYX, and it would clear up most issues. Here’s the link:

There is the usual warning to back up your drives before running ONYX, but I have been using it for years, and have never had an issue. I actually run ONYX every week on my system to keep it running in tip-top shape. Let me know if this works.

June 28, 2011 at 9:22 pm in reply to: Can I use FCP-X stand-alone, in an FCS3 environment?Hey Tony,
They run fine side by side. Actually, when you install FCPX, it puts FCS3’s applications into a folder called “Final Cut Studio”.

Hey Russell,
The easiest way to get the duration of a clip or in/out duration, is to either select the clip or select the region of the clip you want to know the length, and simply double on the timecode window, just above your sequence. The timecode window will change over to show you the duration of your in & out points.
Hope this helps.

Hey Taron,
O.K., let’s start with the video. In this case, you’re right, the Dissolve won’t apply for some unknown reason. In that case, just keyframe it. I just did a quick tip on keyframing in FCPX. Check it out here:
https://library.creativecow.net/articles/mcauliffe_kevin/Quick-Tip-FCPX-Keyframe-Animation.php
As for the audio question, first, select your two video clips, right click on each one of them, and then select “Break Apart Clip Items”.
This will separate the audio and video. Now, simply grab and drag whichever audio clip you want to overlap, over the other audio clip. Now, you’ll see a “bar” on your audio that tells you that your audio is at 0db. Simply hold “Option” on the keyboard, and you can now quickly add a keyframe to your audio track. Now, simply add another one, and set the value to 0. Hope this helps.

I’ll be honest. I was an AME hater. In CS4 it was clunky and slow. In CS5.5, on my 4 year old iMac, it rocks. Super fast, excellent looking encodes. When I produce my tutorials for the COW, and other sites, they are encoded with AME. In many cases I can get 1.5 to 2x’s real time with my encodes. Oh, if only I had an 8 core machine! LOL.

Hey Parke,
Not exactly sure what you mean by “upgraded/improved”. Compressor, unfortunately, has taken the biggest hit as far as improvements goes. I’ll stick with my Sorenson Squeeze and Adobe’s Media Encoder for any H264 encoding.

June 22, 2011 at 1:11 pm in reply to: Does anyone know if the ATI Radeon 5770 supports OpenCLJust posted this to another question. Avid used to do that trick all the time. Just because something isn’t “supported” doesn’t mean it won’t run. FCPX runs awesome on my 4 year old iMac. Top of the line at it’s time.
