    Hey Dave,

The complete dork is the one at Apple that put importing to “CMD+SHFT+I” as the default to begin with. LOL.

    Hey Adrian,

Here’s something I threw together in 5 minutes that should get you moving on the right track. Hope it helps.

  • Hey Nick,

I’m assuming that you’re talking about applying the effect to footage that you shot, and not footage that you’ve done color correction on, which makes the effect completely pointless.

  • Hey Scott,

First question in troubleshooting. What was the last thing you did before you started getting this problem? Secondly, did you try running ONYX on your system. Here’s the link:

Fantastic free utility for the Mac. I always warn people that there is a “notice” that you should always back up your system before running any application like this, but I’ve been using it for over 3 years now, with no problems. Let me know.

    Hey Dave,

Great question, and I’ll answer this from a user perspective, as I am a user just like everyone else. If I had to sum everything up in one word…..Experience. As much as FCPX is an application on its own, it’s only one part in a massive post production workflow, and one thing that I think that I/We bring to the table is an extensive knowledge of not only post applications themselves (FCPX, Motion 5, FCPS3, Media Composer, After Effects, C4D), but that hardware and and workflow techniques that go along with that. Apple has created this little island (FCPX) in a massive ocean (post production world), with seemingly no bridge to get to or from it, and right now, that’s fine for people who have DV/HDV or limited tapeless workflow, but as Apple (hopefully) starts to build bridges to FCPX, and it is used in a professional post production environment, I think that our daily, hands on experience will be an invaluable tool to this forum. Much like FCP7 lives in harmony with AE, Media Composer, C4D, etc, so too will FCPX (i hope). Just my 2 cents worth.

    Hey Craig,

On a side note, I’d be interested in hearing why you would convert your HDV footage to ProRes, instead of editing it in it’s native format. Just curious.

    Hey Osmany,

I’ve been cutting compressed HD for years (about 4 now) on my external Lacie 2TB FW800 drives with no issues whatsoever. Stay away from Proxies, unless you are getting into really large frame sizes. To be honest, as much as everyone loves Pro Res, for me, DVCPro HD 1080i and 720p work perfectly, and look great when broadcast for television, so it will look great if you are editing wedding videos. Hope this helps.

Remember, just like Ian Malcolm said “Just cause you can make dinosaurs, doesn’t mean you should”. Just cause a program is free, doesn’t mean you should use it. Sometimes you do get what you pay for.

  • Trust me, doesn’t matter how new the system is. I have a super powerful Mac Pro tower I cut on every day, and a week into having it, was having permission problems. Ran Onyx. Problem solved. Keep me informed…..

    Hey Osmany,

I guess the first question is do you really need to use Proxies? I work in DVCPro HD (1080i and 720p) and HDV, and drive space has never been an issue. i work on a 4 year old iMac with 2x 2TB Lacie external drives, and have never had an issue with space. Are you editing on the internal drive, and that’s why you want to use proxies? Just curious. Let me know.
