Why I won’t be upgrading for long while
I consider myself a pro user and I’m never the one to upgrade right away – almost always waiting for the first (but usually the second) round of bugs to be dealt with. I rely on FCP for my living and invest in the best equipment possible and try to stay on the cutting edge to remain compatible with the rest of the world.
I just found out that my 3.0 8 core mac pro with 9 gigs of ram won’t support FCPX.

Now in every other way, this machine still screams. $299 for the latest version of FCP sounds great but now I’m looking at more like $4,999 + $299.
No thanks.

You need a new graphics card, not a new computer.

Avid used to do that trick all the time. Just because something isn’t “supported” doesn’t mean it won’t run. FCPX runs awesome on my 4 year old iMac. Top of the line at it’s time.

Question about this: I wasn’t able to even download FCPX at home due to my graphics card not being up to spec. Were you able to get around this somehow?

I knew that… but I also thought that my graphics card upgrade options were somewhat limited based on some shopping I did about a year ago.
So you forced me to do some more research (okay, it was like 10 minutes) and found that the ATI 5770 and 5870 will work in my machine (mac pro 2,1) and are open-cl cards.

Same here and I purchased Radeon 5770 from Apple Online Store for $249 and I should be getting it today or thereabouts. The problem is that the Store claims the 5770 is only supported in MacPros Mid 2010 and later but that’s patently not true as far as actual function. It works going back to the original MacPro 2006.

I find the compatibly listings from Other World Computing much more reliable and easier to understand than Apple’s.

That is typically Apple. They are only testing the hardware options on current hardware, but Barefeats has tested the 5770 and the 5870 on all versions of the MacPro down to the original 2006 version which is the one I have. Knowing now that it works with Final Cut Pro X I will proberly buy that card before Apple discontinues it with the release of the next version of the MacPro. The 5770 is already maxing out the PCI-Express 1 16lane socket on my Mac Pro,
On a different note. Why are people describing it as an upgrade. It is a new product priced as the older upgrades, but you do not loose your current Final Cut 7 and can continue using this for your projects until you feel comfortable using Final Cut X. That is a win win situation in my book.
