  • Trying to edit and…

I’ve been trying to do some editing and…

    – I can’t figure out how to select all the clips from a certain point in the timeline forward. In FCP7, just hit “T”. In FCPX, if I want to scoot everything down so I have a space, it looks like the easiest thing to do right now is insert a gap and then stretch that out.

    – But now that I have a gap, I can’t figure out an easy way to set the duration of it. In fact, I can’t see an easy way to even see what the current duration of the gap is!

Just super basic things that I totally miss! I really do like the “loudness” audio adjustments. I needed something louder that I’m not sending off for a pro mix on (not that I could from FCPX because of no OMF support) and the loudness tool was perfect.

I just miss the basics so much. Makes me sad.

    Hey Russell,

The easiest way to get the duration of a clip or in/out duration, is to either select the clip or select the region of the clip you want to know the length, and simply double on the timecode window, just above your sequence. The timecode window will change over to show you the duration of your in & out points.

    Hope this helps.

It goes even further than that. After you select the gap and double click on the timecode (or control+d if you’re a keyboard junky), simply type in the new duration (for example “510” for 5seconds + 10frames) and hit return. The gap will resize to the entered duration.

What looks like a paperclip in the picture actually marks the in/out points of the selection. It doesn’t look like a paperclip when a longer selection is made 🙂

Actually, I don’t think it’s meant to represent a paper clip. I think it’s just the selection indicator, and since it’s only a few frames it happens to look like a paperclip. I could be wrong.

so would this be the answer for T or “select all tracks forward”?

i miss the basics too… just give me a timeline and a way to edit in classic mode and i think 95% of complaints would be answered.

I thought that I tried control+D, but it seems that my patience with the software is low right now that I hit command+Q so quickly afterwards that I didn’t see the duration window show up. Go figure.

So does this mean that there is only one TC number displayed at all times, no playhead position and duration indications simultaneously?

Thanks Dave you made my evening.

    Fairly hilarious.

    Cheers!
