[Shawn Miller] “In fact, Research in Motion is growing again after some very painful cuts last year.”

Every time I look at RIM’s market share, it shrinks.

They might be adding some jobs, but the net result I believe is still negative.

Premiere Pro works directly with XDCAM EX. You can browse and import the files from within PP. No re-wrap needed, nor any transcoding.

[dan jones] “The files are on the hard drive and not on SxS cards. Could that be the problem?”

No. I always run Transfer on files I’ve already copied off of the SxS card onto a hard drive.

Unfortunately, I’ve never encountered this issue, so I’m out of suggestions. Other than suggesting you also post this over in the XDCAM forum as well.

[dan jones] “Transfer is putting the files into the folder as .mov and .xml.”

    Something does not sound right.

When I execute the Import function on XDCAM Transfer, it only creates one file for each clip, a *.mov file. It does not create any *.xml files.

Are you sure you are using XDCAM Transfer, not Browser?

    [Steve Connor] “Download additional content”

I did this so long ago, I can’t recall if I needed this for XDCAM or not. But I didn’t think the additional content provided codecs.

Isn’t this what you get with additional content?

Here’s what Apple says about XDCAM and FCP X.

    https://support.apple.com/kb/HT4724

I believe it is suggesting what I mentioned. Simply use XDCAM Transfer and Import the files. XDCAM Transfer should simply create the *.mov files that FCP X needs. No additional codecs necessary. Simply a re-wrap of the BPAV files.

    Am I missing something here?

I use XDCAM Transfer. Not Browser.

In the Source Pane on the left, you pick your source.

In Preferences (odd place) you pick the location you are Importing to.

Select your clips and hit Import. (lower right)

The Import process re-wraps the clip(s) as *.mov file(s) and FCP X will import them into an Event.

I’m assuming you can do this with XDCAM Browser, but I’m not sure how. I use XDCAM Browser to make backups of the XDCAM files/directory. Make sure you turn on the error checking option. I don’t think it’s on by default.

Since you’re experiencing faster overall performance, which Mac Pro did you have?

I’m assuming you got the fastest iMac?
    With the added GPU memory?

I thought they had said the the financial benefit of letting those people go wouldn’t show in their earnings until next year?

If that’s the case, then perhaps they didn’t need to let them go. Or perhaps as many.

It didn’t seem as if people moving away from Apple and to (or back to) Avid was a part of these numbers. That impact would probably be realized going forward as well.

Either way, it looks like Avid had turned the corner financially and that’s a good thing.

This may be implied in 3 and 4 …

A better method to manage which Events and Project open when you launch FCP X. Like Event Manager. (sorry Event Manager)

February 8, 2012 at 1:10 pm in reply to: Optical Flow Anomalies

So, you done a lot of optical flow work, with other formats and have not seen issues.

Now, you are using a Drift Camera and FCP X and you see issues?

Is this the first time you’ve used FCP X? Or have you seen issues before?
Is this the first time you’ve used the Drift Camera?

What formats have you used before without issues?

Recently, I’ve worked with XDCAM EX and optical flow. Both natively and converted to Pro Res. I didn’t notice much, if any difference between the two formats. I was never able to get acceptable results. I always wound up with warping.

In my case I believe the issue was the source material, not the format. It was a sporting event. So there was a lot of fast motion. People going in one direction, the background moving by slower and people moving in the opposite direction. All this movement, in various directions seemed to overwhelm the optical flow algorithms.

I tired FCP X, Premier Pro and After Effects (which I believe are the same engine) and Twixtor in PP. Twixtor provides more controls and settings, so you can definitely improve over all the other implementations. They do have a trial plug-in you can download. I highly recommend reading their manual and watching their tutorials. If you’ve never used Twixtor.

One thing you should probably consider is conforming your video first. I shot 720 60P and conformed it to 24P, which slows it down to 40% without having the create new frames. Then work with Twixtor, or the other optical flow implementations.
