xdcam files import
Posted by Dan Jones on February 19, 2012 at 4:56 pmHoping for an easy solution:
I am having trouble importing XDCAM files that I have on my Mac Book Pro(I no longer have the files on SxS card), into Final Cut Pro X.
I have downloaded the most recent Mac and Sony XDCam Transfer files, but I can’t make the Transfer software move the files to Final Cut Pro X.
Thanks in advance.

February 19, 2012 at 5:57 pmI had to use the Sony software as a stand-alone to re-wrap XDCAM to QT’s and then import to FCPX. I think Sony will be showing FCPX compatible version at NAB in April.

February 19, 2012 at 5:58 pmWhat format are they in?, are they in the original BPAV folders?
The latest XDCam transfer does not put the files into FCPX, you need to set a folder for the software to unwrap the files to and then import the files into FCPX manually

February 19, 2012 at 8:26 pmYou want to use the XDCAM Browser 2.0.
As Lance said, you need to set a folder for the software to rewrap the files to and then import the files into FCPX manually.Dajen Productions, Santa Barbara, CA

February 20, 2012 at 2:05 pmThanks so much.
Just to clarify, in Clip Browser I should export using “MFX for NLEs….”?
And then import manually into FCP X?
Thanks again.

February 20, 2012 at 3:30 pmI use XDCAM Transfer. Not Browser.
In the Source Pane on the left, you pick your source.
In Preferences (odd place) you pick the location you are Importing to.
Select your clips and hit Import. (lower right)
The Import process re-wraps the clip(s) as *.mov file(s) and FCP X will import them into an Event.
I’m assuming you can do this with XDCAM Browser, but I’m not sure how. I use XDCAM Browser to make backups of the XDCAM files/directory. Make sure you turn on the error checking option. I don’t think it’s on by default.

February 20, 2012 at 4:48 pmFCP X is saying that it cannot open the .mov files. It gives me a dialogue box for each individual clip saying so.
Transfer is putting the files into the folder as .mov and .xml.

February 20, 2012 at 4:59 pmHave you downloaded the codecs using the “Download additional content” command in the File menu of FCPX?

February 20, 2012 at 5:25 pm[Steve Connor] “Download additional content”
I did this so long ago, I can’t recall if I needed this for XDCAM or not. But I didn’t think the additional content provided codecs.
Isn’t this what you get with additional content?

Here’s what Apple says about XDCAM and FCP X.

I believe it is suggesting what I mentioned. Simply use XDCAM Transfer and Import the files. XDCAM Transfer should simply create the *.mov files that FCP X needs. No additional codecs necessary. Simply a re-wrap of the BPAV files.
Am I missing something here?

Something does not sound right.
When I execute the Import function on XDCAM Transfer, it only creates one file for each clip, a *.mov file. It does not create any *.xml files.
Are you sure you are using XDCAM Transfer, not Browser?

February 20, 2012 at 6:09 pmI am using Transfer.
The files are on the hard drive and not on SxS cards. Could that be the problem?
I have updated all codecs. When I start the import in XDCAM Transfer, it creates the .mov files in the destination folder, but it opens FCP and I get this pop up message for each file:
The document “489_1244_01.mov” could not be opened. Final Cut Pro cannot open files in the “QuickTime movie” format.
