Why transcode? Can’t you just drop the playback resolution to 1/4 and have at it? I’d run a test before wasting all that time transcoding.

Yes, the extract command gets by many, but it is included in almost all NLEs.

Most definitely, without a yellow bar it’s not a real time effect. Rendering for viewing in real time is probably necessary.

AVCHD media is some of the toughest footage to process and playback, therefore, must be placed on a separate internal drive or RAID system and not the internal boot drive. High speed external devices would work equally well. Poor throughput could certainly account for performance and perhaps even your overheating problems.

Since you’ve uninstalled and reinstalled, and your clips are a standard codec, I would suspect your media drive. Can you copy some of the clips to a different hard drive and see how Premiere Pro behaves?

That’s an odd problem, for sure. Can you test exporting a sample video with different media?
