  • Premiere CS6 Markers change source file modification date?

Posted by Gerald Goldman on April 1, 2013 at 6:32 pm

I’ve discovered that if you add Markers to a source clip in Premiere CS6, that it changes the modification date of the source file. I’ve also found that the markers are saved somehow as a part of that source file. If that clip is brought into another, new project, the markers are there with the clip.

This is seemingly harmless, but this new metadata is actually confusing CatDV (sorry to throw in another application) into thinking the file is a new file, so I’m thinking that this is something I should pay attention to.

When I use a “non-destructive” NLE, I don’t want it making any changes to my source material. And on a workflow note, I don’t particularly want markers from one project to be carried across to another project.

Does anyone have any experience with this? Is this supposed to happening or is this some kind of bug?

    Thanks for any help.

I would report it as a bug. The form is here: https://www.adobe.com/go/wish
    Thanks!

Might this be related to the “Write XMP ID to Files on Import” and/or “Enable clip and XMP Metadata linking” preference? (Preferences > Media)

Thanks for the suggestion. I tried turning the XMP settings off and importing some new media. It doesn’t appear to have an effect.

It’s interesting that as soon as a Marker is added, the file is modified. It’s not connected to saving the project.

Again, I wouldn’t be concerned about this, except that CatDV seems to care and CatDV is often a canary in a coal mine when it comes to file issues.

    Thanks again.

Keep in mind that there are applications for those markers within the Adobe family of applications…metadata, assistant editor/producer markups, etc.

If the source markers are set in Prelude in preparation for use in Premiere Pro, or set in Premiere Pro and are necessary as a reference in AE, the markers need to travel with the source media.

The fact that it affects another application is a legitimate reason to file a bug report, though the modification date itself is a function of the OS.
