Sluggish reaction to “J” key
I was hoping that some of you hardware guys could quickly help me out. When I am shuttling forward “L” and then quickly pause “K”, then immediately reverse “J”, Premiere consistently pauses for 5-10 seconds before playing the footage in reverse. This only happens after pausing a video and going directly into reverse.
System is a newly built 3.4 GHz i7 with 16 megs of ram. Could the on-board video card be the cause of this? It’s the Intel HD Graphics 3000 that comes on the ASUS P8Z77-V motherboard.
Any help is much appreciated. I’m not much of a hardware guy but am trying to determine if I should be stepping up to a dedicated video card in order to keep this from happening. The program and playback is running smoothly otherwise.

Maybe. Do you have any external devices plugged in? What kind of media? Where is your media located? On a separate internal drive?

Hi Kevin. I copy the entire 1080p AVCHD folder structure to my internal start-up drive. Should I make it a point to partition or add a separate internal or external scratch disk? I remember in my old FCP days, this was an issue but I guess I didn’t realize that it still was. The only things plugged into the PC are my wired keyboard, a usb hub with a single transmitter to my cordless Logitech mouse, and an external SD card reader for the SD transfer. Plus the typical stuff cat 5 ethernet,audio out etc… On another note, could an overheating cpu be a possible cause for this? I’ve noticed during a couple of longer renders a temp overheating warning of 76-78%. Thanks for your time.

AVCHD media is some of the toughest footage to process and playback, therefore, must be placed on a separate internal drive or RAID system and not the internal boot drive. High speed external devices would work equally well. Poor throughput could certainly account for performance and perhaps even your overheating problems.

I believe that I have taken care of the overheating issue. There was a “tpu” switch on my ASUS motherboard that was enabled that I had to disable. I believe it has something to do with overclocking or something. There is still unfortunately quite a bit of lag.
I believe I will take your advice and try a second internal drive. One final question remains though. On the same system, I have run Vegas Pro 8 in the past with no playback lag issues at all. Same footage, same system, same everything. JKL playback was very responsive and worked as expected in Vegas. Why would it be giving me such problems in Premiere?
