Right hand on JKL, within reach of I and O for marking.
Left hand on the Q key. That’s simply how it works. Better to adapt to how FCP functions than to wish that it would work the way you want it to. You may be wishing a long time.
Personally, I don’t want the Viewer to be active at all times because I don’t capture entire rolls like you do. I like that the Timeline is active, so I can trim and loop before I go on to editing in the next clip.
Recall, FCP was written back in the day when drives were 4 GB and no one could capture a whole roll, even if they wanted to. This behavior has not changed and probably won’t change any time soon. Sorry.
BTW, if you disagree, you can always request features on the boards at apple.com or at 2-pop.com.

I disagree. LT is great for doing bullet builds. True, you do have to read the manual to understand how it works, though. BTW, it’s MUCH faster than working with Photoshop. Once you get passed the hurdles, you can fly with LT. Check out my book for the lowdown and simple explanations about integrating LT with Title 3D. Note: I never use the “legacy” FCP titlers. That went away in FCP 2. Welcome to the party.

Matthew,
We see this problem every day. It’s due to a lack of understanding how FCP’s RT Extreme effects preview works and lack of a proper FCP workstation config.Regarding previews:
You can either work in lower resolution and drop frames on purpose to get a RT Preview by working in “Unlimited RT”, or we can work in higher resolution, but we may not get a good preview by working in “Safe RT”. Supposedly, this will be much better in FCP 5 with “dynamic previews”. For highest quality work in Safe RT.Regarding setup:
This also boils down to the fact that most folks rip FCP outta the box and rarely read the manual, especially regarding proper setup–check page 55 if you want to make sure your FCP workstation is set up to spec. Basically, hook up a video monitor and powered speakers to your DV Deck or Camcorder as you work. Related to this problem is, “I can’t hear my audio!”With that said:
The first thing you want to do is work in Safe RT. Change the RT Pop up menu to Safe RT.
Next, you want to make sure that you are rendering at full quality. Go to your Sequence>Render menus (all three of them) and make sure that “Preview” and “Full” are checked.
Make sure all titles and graphics lie on whole, even numbers on the X,Y axis (Check this in the Motion tab’s “Center” parameter.
Finally, and most importantly, hook up a video monitor, so you can see the quality of your rendered graphics AS you work. The Canvas only shows a RT preview and not the full quality of your rendered graphics.Like I said, we see this problem every single day, sometimes multiple times. Next time, do a search for faster answers, if you like.

Stick with the native codec of whatever you shot with. Did you shoot DVCPro 25? Use a DVCPro 25 preset. DV-NTSC? Use a DV-NTSC preset. Hopefully that makes sense to you.

May 3, 2005 at 5:12 pm in reply to: Jumping ship from Media 100- am I going to be upset? You don’t need an array if you will be working with DV over FireWire. An extra internal SATA will do. Much cheaper and they come in up to 400 GB volumes these days. Welcome to the fray!

Fake out FCP’s render pipeline….
Nest it and apply the blur to the nest.My book talks more about the implications of tricking the render pipeline. If you’re into FX, please check it out.

I use FCP or plug-ins for FCP.
