With 10 Bit Footage SD you are talking what? Over 100 MB/sec. That is asking a lot of your HUGE Array. How is the Array Striped? RAID 0? Are all your timeline settings correct? Are you in Unlimited RT?

The correct term is Travel Matte, not Traveling Matte people.

I would go with something speedier if you want to playback HDCAM footage, especially if it is 10 bit. A Medea array or the like would be my preference.
If you decide to go the cheap route, don’t forget to unmount your drive before shutting down EVERY time. We’ve seen a lot of people here in SF corrupting drives that have 2 drives striped at RAID 0 in FW800 drives. You lose one drive, you lose all of your media. If you unmount your drive prior to shutdown, you will be operating the drive in a safer manner.

The tutorial was going on well until he hit the Motion Tab. NOooooooooo! There is no control over the keyframes position in the graph when you are just clicking and dragging around there.
I don’t use the Motion Tab at all because it is not precise enough. The “angle” explanation is really only half of what is going on. When you get your head FULLY wrapped around what you are doing when you move these “very special” keyframes, then you will want the additional control that only the Speed Tool can give you.
I use the Speed Tool and stay in the Timeline. It’s way better because it gives you an interactive pop up “tool tip” showing what is really going on as you click and drag the tool – you do NOT get the same kind of interactive feedback in the Motion Tab.
As Capt. showed in the beginning of the tut. – Just widen up your Timeline in Clip Keyframes mode (I widen them even further by clicking and dragging in the gutter next to the Auto Select button) and enable the Time Remap “graph” by CNTRL + Clicking right in the track.
Once you are set up this way, you can REALLY control the movement of the Time Remap Keyframe. Note that when a keyframe is constrained and moved vertically (by clicking and dragging the tool), you are spooling through available frames of the clip. When a keyframe is constrained and moved horizontally (By Option + dragging with the tool), you are taking that particular frame and moving it to a new place in time.
Either way, will affect the speed of the clip AND you know exactly what is going on and can pick precise frames. In the Motion Tab you cannot constrain that keyframe’s movement. Constraining the keyframe horizontally and vertically gives you a lot more control with Time Remapping.
I like the explanation in my book much better. Although the Capt.’s tutorial was OK, it doesn’t really show you the power of the Speed Tool and how it can give you more info and power: The Info Pop up’s interactive display, the power to constrain the keyframe horizontally and vertically AND see the curve all in the Timeline is the superior way to Time Remap.
Go tell it to the judge!

The other thing is to get a PCI card with FW 800 I/O and put your GRaid on that separate bus.

I doubt you’ll find a used one, since they just came out.
No one knows when new towers will come out. But you can be sure that the price will drop as soon as something new on the Intel side comes out.
Do you need to edit today? Just buy the Quad.

If you do capture MiniDV and you don’t want audio drift problems I can make 2 suggestions.
Don’t shoot with a Canon XL1
Don’t capture anything to FireWire drives, particularly a 75 minute capture!
Use your spare internal SATA drive (Your media drive) instead.Drop outs should not be a problem.

And if you didn’t already know, Superimpose is an editing style and all it does is place a clip of equal duration on the video track above the clip. It does not actually “Superimpose” the image. It’s confusing for newbies for sure.
Just know that you can just as easily drag and drop or do an Overwrite edit onto V2.

Rule 1: Always check your rendered graphics in a video monitor and NOT the Canvas.
Also, make sure the PIPs are on a whole, even integer for the X axis.
You must be in Safe RT at Full Quality in the RT Pop Up as well.There are many pitfalls in getting clean renders, but with FCP 5 you certainly can get great quality for your renders.
