    Dear All,

Wondering what the best recommedation you have for an external harddrive purchase. I’m thinking of getting a 500 gig drive to back up HDV and HDCAM material for use w/ FCP, and obviously I’d want something w/ a 800 firewire. The optinos are endless, but I don’t think I’ll be using this drive to move back and forth too much… this is what I’ve been considering.. if there’s something you’d recommend, I’d love to know.

    1. G Tech — 500 gig Titanium (has a fan)
    2. Lacie 500 Gig
    3. Glyph Storage — Tekserve in NY seems to highly recommend this unit, even though it’s more known for use w/ audio material…

okay. thanks — it’s too many options!

I vote for the G-Raid. I have 3. Darn solid, and match my G5.

    And my new powerbook.

I would go with something speedier if you want to playback HDCAM footage, especially if it is 10 bit. A Medea array or the like would be my preference.

If you decide to go the cheap route, don’t forget to unmount your drive before shutting down EVERY time. We’ve seen a lot of people here in SF corrupting drives that have 2 drives striped at RAID 0 in FW800 drives. You lose one drive, you lose all of your media. If you unmount your drive prior to shutdown, you will be operating the drive in a safer manner.

If you decide to get an external FW drive/setup with multiple drives in the enclosure, and you plan on using the drive while editing with FCP, make sure you get an enclosure that has a fan. With constant use, the actual hard drives can get pretty hot. Bridge circuit boards in the cases are not friendly with excessive heat either.

If you are adventurous, you may want to consider getting an enclosure kit and drives separately, and then assemble them.

Other good vendors to check out: WiebeTech and FW Depot. For larger, mutli-drive enclosure kits, check out (in addition to those mentioned above): Mac Gurus. For reviews of various systems, you may want to consider perusing BareFeats, which contains a lot of hardware reviews.

You may want to also consider an external SATA drive setup, which can be less troublesome than FW (and much better performing).

Hotswap enclosures (both FW and SATA) provide the flexibility of being able to rotate drives for storage, transport, etc.

    Maybe something like this ?

    TEMPO SATA E4P https://www.sonnettech.com/product/tempo_sata_e4p.html
    +
    FUSION 500P https://www.sonnettech.com/product/fusion500p.html
    +
    SATA drives

You can plug 4 FUSION 500P so you can have 10TB if you use 500GB disks.
