Yes it is.
Replace Edit will execute its function with transitions intact. I do it all the time. This is with version 5.0.4.
I did find what appears to be a repeatable problem (at least on my system running 5.0.4) in testing this case, though.
I found that if you are on the first frame of the clip and want to Replace Edit from that frame, you get an “Insufficient Content” warning even though there is plainly enough media ahead of the playhead.
Replace Edit works in all other instances.
BUG? Can others test this please?
This is problematic for the pro editor since in many cases we use Replace Edit from the first frame.

I wouldn’t want to be subject to any network traffic preventing my files from playing back.[Jwedit] “Also, if you are going to back up the project file on the network nightly, why not work directly off of the raid?”
It’s for safekeeping purposes. If your computer gets crushed to dust, at least you’ll have a copy on the network ( I use my iDisk). You can save it anywhere for a backup, just somewhere that is NOT on your computer.You should not keep your project file(s) on your Media Drive (RAID) as:
1) A drive may fail and if you are running RAID 0, you’ll not only lose the media, but the project file as well.
2) Drives should only contain media on them, as they need to be erased and maintained frequently.Kevin Monahan

XDCAM is a strange beast, isn’t it? It’s got an MXF wrapper which might be preventing Start/Stop detection.

I like the TIFF method too. You get more RT as it plays as a single video stream rather than a multiple stream PSD file + it is editable. The only drawback would that you can’t animate the layers unless you break it back out into a layered PSD.

Actually, all you need to do is import it into Boris Title Crawl which is in your generators folder in most cases. If it’s not (likely you have FCP 4-4.5), you can install it from your install disk>extras folder>Boris Calligraphy. The tab stops should come in intact. Do not use the asterisk method in the standard text generator as there is not as much control and is a lot of extra work you can avoid with Boris.Kevin Monahan

It’s best practice to have your FCP project file on your Mac HD. Backup the project to a folder on the network nightly.

Maybe your BBG is on the fritz. Rent one and see if that could be a problem. It has in the past for me.

Likely it was only the first clip of the batch that failed due to lack of pre-roll. The fix is capture everything but the first clip and manually place the first clip using Capture Now.This is why it is crucial to have plenty of pre-roll and post-roll for your master tapes. Often it’s the DP that controls this – in your case the telecine house.

It’s an old wive’s tale that logging and capturing will destroy your camcorder. I’ve used mine (which is a cheap one) for 6 years and it’s still taking a licking and keepin’ on ticking.
My feeling is that DV will be obsolete before a camcorder will be broken from log and capturing.
If you capture individual clips rather than a whole tape, it’s definitely an advantage in the long run over the short run time you’ll save. Keep that in mind. 😉
