As far as your stills go, it is advantageous to keep all your graphics to the same format and optimized to not be more than 2x the native frame size and no more than 72 DPI. Otherwise, it’s overkill.

Maybe I’m wrong, but I don’t think you can change input controls in component or SDI. In composite the controls will not be grayed out. At least, that’s the way it was with my ancient board back in the day.

First of all, you should not be editing w/o a deck/cam attached (unless yer in the Cafe or on a plane). How else can you monitor audio and video correctly?
Secondly, you have to be very careful with FireWire drives. The first question I would ask is: is the problematic HD initialized with Mac OS Extended? Check this in Disk Utility.
