you could use vector paint to keyframe in a stroke over your text. then set the composite paint setting to ‘as matte.’ it takes time, but you can get good results.

with the standard pro bundled effects (it may be in standard effects, too), you’ll probably need to use mesh warp (or something similar) to start to deform one object into another, and like wise, deform the second object somewhat like the previous one. then as the mesh warps animate, you’ll need to transition from one to the other (disolve or gradient wipe, etc). it will take some time.

January 30, 2007 at 6:23 pm in reply to: pls help! do i need to interlace animation for export?yeah, if your sequence isn’t interlaced, rendering interlaced won’t have any effect… unless you rendered your sequence at 60fps, then you can render 30fps interlaced to help smooth your motion.
i’m not familiar with flash, but if you can render your sequence out at 60fps (or 30fps interlaced) you should be able to smooth out your animation.

if you’re going to effect it on the pc, i would use the animation codec… why lose any quality at this stage. then, for delivery, if you need to render to a specific codec compress it at that point.

HDV or DVCproHD (same as DVCPro100) are common codecs that handle hd data rate demands at firewire date rate restrictions. so those should play back on most systems.
H 264 is a great looking codec, but has a very high pocessing overhead to encode and decode, so your client will need a fast processor to view in real time.
which ever you choose, your client will also need to have that codec to view your work, so that’s your main restriction. if they don’t have any of these codecs then you may need to render to mpegs at a compression level that can fit their data rate limit for real time viewing, and that may take some experimenting.

does this always happen? or is it only after you have been working in ae for a while? are other applications open when you notice this problem?
you might also try disabling open gl (in ae prefs). i don’t think the menus are drawn with open gl, i’m just grasping at straws here.

if you have photoshop there is an action set that works well to reduce interlace issues with still images. it will selectively blur the problem areas rather than the whole image. however, it may work best if you have the image scaled to the final output size.

sorry… twirl down the z position properties for the null layer and the layer you want to link. then select the z pos property of the layer that will be linked and choose add expression from the animation menu.
this should bring up another line of options/icons under the z position. in that line there is a pick whip, drag that pick whip to the z pos property of the null. now there should be some text in the field to the right of the pick whip (and other) icons for z pos. that property is now linked to the propery of you null.
if you add your multiplier to the end of that text it will offset the z pos of that layer in respect to the z pos of your null.

use the pick whip to link each layer’s z pos to the null layer’s z pos. then just add a mulitiplier at the end each layer’s expression, like *2 or *.5
