yep, the lossless animation codec is used as an intermediate codec, to go between ae and other pieces of software while maintaining the highest image quality.

bright reds can be problematic in video… what is your destination for this piece… web/computer or video?
if it is video, you have two choices… you can make a broadcast safe color level adjustment in ae by creating an adjustmnet layer at the top of your comp, then add levels and set the black output to 16 and the white output to 235. or if you are taking the piece into an nle, you can import the file as rgb and have the nle convert it to yuv color space. if you do the latter, you will need to work witha codec that gives you better color, like losseless or perhaps a png image sequence, to maintain the color as well as possible.
if you are outputing for web/computer dispay, then you may want to work again with a better codec as mentioned above, and use a compression tool, like sorenson squeeze, to create the compressed file. compression software will almost always give you better quality and smaller files than just rendering out of ae. they have the advantage of being able to look at all the frames and base compression on the whole piece rather than frame by frame as each gets rendered.

i belive the problem is that you don’t have universal binariy versions of the plugins.
if you want to test my theory, run ae8 under rosetta… select the ae8 app and choose get info from the file menu. int the giet info ewindow there is a check box for open using rosetta. select it then try openning ae8 and see if the plugins are available.
i noticed the same problem with some older codecs, that sudenly weren’t available in ae8, but were still usable in ae7 on the same machine. you just need to find universal binaries of the plugins, although some (like knoll) may not be out yet, and others (like trapcode) will cost money to upgrade.

cc scale wipe would work, if you crank up the scale value… it’s also a bit more refined than the effect i was think of

i found it, it is in the ae app package.
select the ae application and control-click (or right-click) and select show package contents. in contents/resources you’ll find the preseteffects.xml file…. modify and save.

actually, he mentions that he assumes the mac file would be in a similar location, but could not be certain… have you tried ‘find?’
i was hoping to find that xml file to do some hacks of my own, i hope there is a mac equivalent….

i’m pretty sure this effect is in pete’s plugins at petewarden.com. i think it is smear. there is a notehr way to create it that was mentioned a long time ago here, i think it used keylight… if you don’t want to download the free pete’s plugins, search the ae form for smear.

i’m having trouble replicating your problem with card dance….
i liked your expression… i modified it a bit to work for any size comp or any size layers and you can add it to all layers (it doesn’t need the first to be in place) and since it’s based on the index number to modify the postion of a layer in the grid you just need to drag it up or down in the layer order, all other layers will adjust accordingly.
numCols = Math.round(thisComp.width / width);
grid_y = Math.round((index / numCols) – 0.51);
grid_x = index – (numCols * grid_y);
x = (width * grid_x) – (width / 2);
y = (height * grid_y) + (height / 2);
[x, y]its a bit different than dan’s in that it assumes you want the grid to fill the comp as well as it can, rather than defining number of rows and columns.
but even after creating the grid comp and applying card dance witht he cols and rows set to 8 and 8 (and making a gradient for offset), i didnt have any incorrect dividing.
