When I was upgrading from CS2 to CS3, i uninstalled CS2, that left only the plugins inside the old folder (since they were not part of the CS2). then i installed CS3, and moved the files into new folder. everything works.

I’ll try that after I complete this project. I’m afraid to do this since I manually pointed the newly installed plug-ins directly to the CS3 folder and they didn’t show up when freshly installed.

On the G5, both copies of the app are still there and it read the plugs just fine.

Are you running on an Intel Mac?

i belive the problem is that you don’t have universal binariy versions of the plugins.

if you want to test my theory, run ae8 under rosetta… select the ae8 app and choose get info from the file menu. int the giet info ewindow there is a check box for open using rosetta. select it then try openning ae8 and see if the plugins are available.

i noticed the same problem with some older codecs, that sudenly weren’t available in ae8, but were still usable in ae7 on the same machine. you just need to find universal binaries of the plugins, although some (like knoll) may not be out yet, and others (like trapcode) will cost money to upgrade.

I know that Boris Continuum Complete 4 is Universal Binary and it doesn’t show up.

The others I’m not so sure, they’re about 3 months old, I’ll have to check.

Havne’t heard from Boris yet, but Red Giant just confirmed that all of my plugs from them do not work yet with CS 3.

I’ll just keep going with AE 7 for the time being. Thanks for the input!

    Walter,

I had to call Boris, buy the upgrade to BCC 5.0 to get the universal binary versions of BCC for FCP (fxplug) and for AE. The upgrade was like $495.00. This was the only way they work on an Intel Mac (at least that’s what the people at Boris told me).

i was mistaken by mentioning trapcode effects required a purchase of the latest upgrade to be cs3/intel-mac compatible…. you can download the updates for the earlier versions from red giant, here. scroll down to downloads & updates.

    mistaken again….

free updates are only for particular, lux, sound keys and echo space…. shine, starglow and 3d stroke seem to require purchase of the latest versions.

Yep, I know all about that. That upgrade came out right after I purchased the 4.0 upgrade. I missed the free upgrade by 2 days. I’ve actually found most of those same plug-ins in other packages because I wasn’t about to pay $495 again one month after I already paid $495. I’ll just use those plugs in AE7 if I need them.

here’s a trick I use. Make a separate folder in one of your copies of AE’s plug-ins folder. Call it 3rd party or something like that.

Now create an alias (mac) or a shortcut (windows) to that folder. Put the alias or the shortcut in your CS3 Plug-ins folder.

There you go. No duplicate files. Everything should work. If you’re on an Intel Mac and you really need a 3rd party plug-in that isn’t UB yet you can select the info for your AE CS3 app and check the Rosetta option, then open AE. Your plug-ins will show up. So far for me everything that I’ve needed has worked just fine, ae just isn’t as fast.
