particular (trapcode.com) has a snow preset that is pretty close to (maybe exactly) what was used in the you tube example, called snowy_night. cc snow (bundled with ae), is close, but won’t give you the 3d perspective and depth fall off. you should be able to create a very similar effect with cc particle world (also with ae)… it’s a 3d particle system so you should be able to get the perspective, and you can simulate the falloff by setting color map changes over life of the particle.

you can definately do this with a particle generator, like particular (also from trapcode), where you could set you illustrator figure as a static particle and move the emitter along the path.

September 27, 2007 at 9:01 pm in reply to: Mask to Position Path

you want to use a mask path as a motion path, right?

select the layer with the mask and hit ‘mm’ (that’s 2 m’s on the keyboard), that will bring up the mask properties. select the ‘mask path’ property and hit copy. then select the position property of layer you want to paste the path data into, enable keyframing for position (click the stop watch) and the paste.

you can adjust the duration of the movement by dragging the start and/or end keyframes.

yep, to keep whole pixel movement, there are really only two variables, duration of the move and the length of the list. the movement per frame is derived from those. other factors that get involved, like frame size, frame rate etc. are determined by format.

uh-oh, me and dave are at odds… there goes our credit roll business plans…. 😉

there may be a potential problem due to the uncommon method of bringing the footage up to broadcast standards, but i’m really not sure.

if you really hate pulldown, maybe you could try working in 30p. if you can shoot 30p, it’s almost the best of both worlds… film-like progressive feel, but at broadcast friendly framerates…

i don’t think there would be any problem with this method if you needed to get 24p up to broadcast rates, unless a client felt the a pulldown created smoother motion. i guess if someone needed to re-edit they might be a little confused by the duplicate frames, but they’d probably figure it out, and the duplicates should be in a regular cadence, so it shouldn’t be hard to remove.

as an alternate method, i believe you could put your footage into a 23.976 comp, but at render set the render settings to use 29.97 for the frame rate rather than the comp’s frame rate (default).

the result should be the same, just another way to work…

September 27, 2007 at 6:42 pm in reply to: video clip hold

there are a few ways to do this… the way i like, is to use time remapping…

select the footage (actually it can be a nested comp too) in the comp. then choose layer>time>enable time remapping. a property of time remapping with two keyframes should show up for your footage (or nested comp). don’t touch the keyframes yet, position the play head where you want the footage to freeze and add a keyframe. now you can delete the end keyframe for the time remapping property and the footage will hold on the keyframe you added.

if you need the last frame to extend beyond the original length of the footage, just pull the end of the footage as long as you need it (time remapping allows you to do this).

if you need to reset the footage, just click the stop watch for the time remapping property and all goes back to the way it was.

    that makes sense… 🙂

i still suspect the camera may be to blame, i haven’t heard of any other delay issues using firewire out…

it may be related to the camcorder… it may have a low-power mode that it switches to after being on for a while that may be causing a lag… or it could be something else, i can’t say i’ve noticed a lag using a decklink card and smpte-c monitor.

i’m not sure what you’re gaining by using a camcorder viewer as a monitor… is the set up primarily to lay to tape?

September 27, 2007 at 2:09 pm in reply to: problems cs3

this technote was posted last weekend in response to someone who noticed render slowdowns after a period of time…

https://www.adobe.com/go/kb402403 (for some reason this link takes a long time to open)

it only addresses an issue with more than 6 processors, i’m not sure if that helps you….

i don’t know how much time you want to spend troubleshooting this, but have you tried sending 4-5 to the render queue, render, then another 4-5 and see if you experience the same render slow down? if not, then there maybe an issue with cs3 and purging the ram cache between renders in the queue.

do you have multiprocessing enabled? if so, you could test with mp disabled to see if you get the same issue.

one last thing, if disk cache is enabled, try disabling it… at least that can take any potential drive issue out of the picture.

i wish i had a better answer for you.
