if yo have particular, then you should be able to recreate the technique that andrew used to create the 3d stroke with particle world, then use the obstruction layer feature. if you don’t have particular, 3d stroke is cheaper, and it has the z-clipping feature that can be used as mentioned earlier. i think i remember a tutorial donig exactly what you are doing years ago on creativemac.com, search archives for 3d stroke tutorial.

i think you want 3d stroke… what you need is z-clipping, a way to define a plane in z space where the image gets clipped. then you can split you stroke effect on two separate layers and sandwitch the text in between… 3d stroke has an option to do this.

dave’s right, if you want to work in 24p, stay 24p throughout, right up to dilivery… if you had to shoot 24p to tape, remove the pulldown at capture or right after, and try to capture each shot individually (it will make removing the pulldown easier).
if the destination is broadcast, you might also try 30p… it’s the benefits of progressive at broadcast frames rates… it’s still filmy, but you’ll never have to add (or remove) a pulldown.
sorry if i’m starting to sound preechy, but i’ve been dealing with bad 24p footage for a few weeks…. and i’m really trying to start a new movement.
’30p… it’s the new italian’ (i’m not sure what that means, i’m a bit punchy)

the cc effects (cycore effects) have been bundled with ae for a while now. if you have cs3 they were installed automaticly, if you have ae7 or earlier they are on the install disk in a third-party or extras folder. both cc snow and cc particle world show up in the simulation effects.
actually, in versions prior to cs3, the cc effects may have only been bundled with ae pro versions…. but i’m not sure.

it shouldn’t look distorted, but if it has a standard 4:3 par (pixel aspect ratio) of 0.9, then you will need to scale it up to fill the 16:9 frame.
did that make sense?

i can’t say i would recommend using opengl for a final render… there are noticeable differences on how it renders anti aliasing and blending modes compared to the ae render engine. then you throw in the fact that ae’s incorporation of opengl has often lead to instability of the application, it is often just easiest to turn it off, and never look back.
but if you are desperate, i guess its worth a try…
i have actually designed a few projects around opengl accelerated effect and features (almost just to test the benefits of opengl), and i have gotten good results.. and they rendered 4-5 times faster than ae’s engine even with multiprocessing turned on (4-core macpro)… but i like trouble shooting things and occassionally challenging myself on otherwise simple projects.
generally, i set opengl for interactive prviews only, but i won’t hesitate to switch to adaptive resolution if things don’t seem to work right. also worth noting, if you have opengl always on for previews, it will turn off multiprocessing for preivews… likewise if you turn it on for renders. the two are incompatible….

i was playing around with cc particle world… if you don’t have particular, you can create a very similar snow fall animation with cc particle world.
adjust settings for x and z radius, y position fo the producer. and angle the camera settings upwards (x rotation around -45). set particle to faded sphere and set the color to grey and white, then try setting physics animation to twirl, velocity to around 0.1, gravity to around 0.1.
that should get you in the ball park… if you have more questions, just post them.

preview settings shouldn’t effect the render settings… in the render settings, you could set the renderer to use opengl for final render… i’m not sure that would help, and it may change things somewhat (opengl renders things a little differently than ae’s render engine). you’ll also be limited to what your graphcis card can render (there are differences in the versions of opengl that are used by various cards).
i would try the purge frame settings in the secret menu, if that doesn’t work, you could try an opengl render.
is this for final delivery or just client approval process?
if needed, the save ram preview is in the composition menu.

have you tried setting the secret pref to purge frames at a set interval…? if ae has trouble purging the ram cache when it hits the cache limit it will often just quit the render…
to get the secret pref, hold the shift key while selecting any pref (if you’re using a mac hold the mouse button the entire time while selecting the prefer, rather than using multiple clicks). then from the preference selection pulldown, select ‘secret’ (at the bottom). set the purge every xx frames to a number that is bellow where it was quiting/crashing… so if it was quiting at frame 120, set it to purge at 100 or so.
