Making a light streak zoom around text/objects in 3D
Posted by Peter Klavins on September 28, 2007 at 9:31 pmGreetings all,
I’ve got a comp that I’m working on that uses the light streaks in https://www.videocopilot.net/tutorials.html (it’s tutorial n. 30) and I want to make the light streak actually do loops around the text, as well as actually being masked out when the streak is behind the text, and not masked when the streak is in front.
I’ve looked at the tutorials here, the closest was the one on how to obscure lens flares, but it didn’t work for me.
Any help is much appreciated 🙂

September 28, 2007 at 11:24 pmTry, tutorial number 21. It shows you how to make a light streak in 3D space. After you do that, all you have to do is turn on the 3D switch for your text layer.

September 28, 2007 at 11:52 pmUmm… tutorial n. 21 on that page is one for gun muzzle flash lighting effects… and also I’ve already got my text layers in 3D mode. The only thing that I can do to affect which shows on top, the text or the particle, is to move the layers in the timeline, which of course won’t do for animation.
So, help still needed please…

September 29, 2007 at 1:05 amthis is the 3d stroke without 3dstroke tutorial…?
i think you want 3d stroke… what you need is z-clipping, a way to define a plane in z space where the image gets clipped. then you can split you stroke effect on two separate layers and sandwitch the text in between… 3d stroke has an option to do this.

September 29, 2007 at 1:17 amIf you are using Particular and the OTHER light streak tutorial from Andrew, you can make your particles be obscured by another layer using the Obscuration Layer in the Visibility settings.
You can check out a sample of this that I did here:

Is that the new logo for Red-Rectangle Studio? Pretty nice 🙂 -

September 29, 2007 at 9:18 amErk… I forgot to mention this particle streak is made with CC Particle World… convex lens particle type, pretty much identical to Andrew Kramer’s tutorial…
I’ll have a look at trapcode’s Obstruction too tho…
So any way to do this with CC Particle World?

September 29, 2007 at 2:21 pmi can’t think of a way to get a layer in the middle of particle world…
if yo have particular, then you should be able to recreate the technique that andrew used to create the 3d stroke with particle world, then use the obstruction layer feature. if you don’t have particular, 3d stroke is cheaper, and it has the z-clipping feature that can be used as mentioned earlier. i think i remember a tutorial donig exactly what you are doing years ago on creativemac.com, search archives for 3d stroke tutorial.

September 29, 2007 at 2:53 pmOK I did this effect in Trapcode Particular, but the thing is I want more than one layer to obscure the streak of light… can i just duplicate the ‘Obscure [Layer Name]’ layers and change the parent?

September 29, 2007 at 6:05 pm“Red 2.5D Monolith Studios” actually. A great client!
You can use two layers as obscuration layers (there is a setting “Also obscure with..”). Unfortunately, neither of these can be keyframed, so you’ll not be able to change this.
Another option is to use a track matte layer for the Particles, and do a simple roto of the track matte layer. This is the most flexible (and time consuming) option.
