if you enabled multiprocessing, try disabling it and setting the memory and cache settings to the defaults… there is normally a stall when cs3 first fires up all the render engines for multiprocessing, maybe yours is getting stuck trying to run the extra render engines. and with only 4gb of ram, i don’t think you are getting many extra processors involved.

you’ll also want to make sure that opengl is not set to always on for previews… (if opengl is set to always on, it will not use ae’s render engine)

if it still has problems, try setting opengl to ‘always on’ and see if you can get a ram preview. if you can, then you are having an issue with ae’s render engine… and i would contact adobe with the issue.

October 4, 2007 at 3:58 pm in reply to: new Mac, which is best?

the 6 processor limit on large frame sizes may be something that gets fixed in an ae update or possibly the next osx (don’t quote me on that, i’m just speculating. it just doesn’t seem like a major architecture change to me, just a bug…)

the graphics card is not usually going to be all that important to ae, unless have opengl set to always on and set your render settings to render with opengl, which very few people do. its also worth noting that with opengl previews set to always on, ae cannot use multiprocessing for ram previews… same goes if you enable it for rendering.

for ram, you’d like to get around 2gb per core for multiprocessing in ae (so, 4cores = 8gb; 8cores = 16gb). you might want more if you like having other apps open, like photoshop… you could get another 2gb per app that you like to have open with ae…

you should also check with all your thirdy-party plugins that you can’t live without to make sure they have cs3/universal binary versions of their effects available… some are free updates, some you need to update tothe lateset versions and a few aren’t available yet (or if they are really old, not available ever…). otherwise you may find yourself forcing cs3 to run under rosetta and take a performance hit, just to get those effects.

dell used to make some pretty good higher end machines several years ago…. but i haven’t kept up much with the latest pc developments, i’ve been in a mac shop for several years now… although i’ve read great things about their more recent high end displays.

October 4, 2007 at 1:29 pm in reply to: Why don’t my plugins work??? AE7-CS3

go to the plugin maker’s website and downlaod the latest versions of the plugins.

if you have an intel mac, you will need to make sure the latest versions of the plugins are universal binaries (made to work on either powerpc or intel processors).

most third-party plugins have free updates ofr cs3 and/or universal binaries, some may require an upgrade purchase to a newer version of the plugin, and some may not be available yet… just check the websites.

if you are on an intel mac, and you are in a pinch you can get use of non-ub plugins by forcing cs3 to run under rosetta (it is an option in the get info window to run a ub application under rosetta). it wouldn’t be the prefered way to run ae, but you’ll get the plugins back.

October 3, 2007 at 7:08 pm in reply to: Anchoring stills to moving images

yes, but you’ll need to use ae’s tracker to track that point on the footage, then apply the tracker data to the image (or a null and parent the image to the null)….

a little confusing, check/search the tutorials for tracker or tracking and consult the help menu for how to use the tracker, if you have more specific questions or troubles with the tracker, just post them.

unfortunately you can’t use expressions on a mask (or its points), which is what i think you are trying to do…

however the beam effect, which simply draws a line (although by default that line looks like a light saber) between 2 points. you can attach one point to your tracked point and set the other point where it needs to be and you should get what your looking for (or what i think you are looking for).

October 3, 2007 at 3:45 pm in reply to: files are green

actually, if the problem is only avi reference files it may be an issue with a windows component or media player… it’s interesting that it is only some reference files…

is there any difference in the referenced media or project timelines of working reference files versus non-working refernce files?

are avid and ae on the same machine? and is the media that is being referenced on a local drive?

it may be that your avi is referencing media that is not available to ae… or maybe there is a bug with cs3 and some reference files.

October 3, 2007 at 2:29 pm in reply to: Is newest AE better performer than AE6.5 on Intel Mac?

true, there are some issues with some third-party effects… in order to use third-party effects on the intel version of cs3 you need intel versions of the plugins, so you should check your plugin providers’ sites for compatibility with cs3 and intel macs. some companies provide the updates for free, others you may need to purchase upgrades, and some may not be available yet (or if they are old, maybe never). note that you could force cs3 to run under rosetta and regain access to powerpc effects, but that’s not a workflow i would desire.

the opengl issue was fixed in the 8.0.1 update, and i have the multiprocessing feature enabled and working on my 4-core macpro, although i wish i had more ram…
