thank steve roberts, he’s the one who turned me on to photojpeg… i’ve only worked with hdv once, but photjpeg was a great help, and i’ve heard many others use this workflow…

[Dustin Barrons] “I would love to shoot 30p from this point forward”
a new convert to the church of 30p… i’ll be passing the colection plate around soon…
like dave mentnioned the problem with 30p is having a camera to shoot it, but after that it is a very easy workflow. 24p can be fairly easy to work with, as long as you follow the workflow dave laid out. it’s when that workflow get broken or you try to work in 29.97 footage that it gets difficult. and, honestly, probably every one who has done more than just edit 24p footage has run into these headaches, so it’s not just you. but it just seems logical that if a prject need to go to broadcast, staying 29.97 is better (if it goes to dvd or film, hey, 24p is great).
i read a bit about premiere and 24p. it sounded like your set up was correct, and that in a 24p project, capturing 24p should have removed the pulldown… things that may have gone wrong:
-premiere was trying to remove an advanced pulldown (remember, even if the camera shoots 24fps, if its on tape there is always a pulldown).
-you captured a bunch of clips at once (each shot on a camera will record a new pulldown cadence, if you capture multiple shots premiere may have had problems consistently removing the pulldown from those captures). you should try to capture each clip individually.
-there may be some issue with 24p and dynamic link or a setting in premiere related to that. you could try pulling the raw clips straight from the capture folder that your project was set to record to into ae and see what they look like then, or export each clip to lossless animation and take those into ae and check those out.
once you get the 24p pulldown issue fixed, remember you will still need to add a pulldown back in prior to editing it in with the 29.97 footage that you will be shooting (its easier to add the pulldown to 24p, than it would be to convert the 29.97 interlaced to 23.976 progressive). at that point you will be treating it exactly like you would any other 29.97 footage.

i think you’ll find that working in 24p isn’t as great as some people make it out to be… (especially for broadcast)..
once you figure out the issue with the footage, whether it was a capture issue or an export issue (dynamic link may be to blame, you may want to export each clip individually), and get that corrected so you have progressive frames at 23.976 fps to work with in ae (you can use ae to remove the pulldown if you bring in each clip individually). i would finish all the work that needs to be done on the 24p footage (the keying, the compositing, etc.).
then you’ll need to bring that up to 29.97 to edit with the new 29.97 footage that you are shooting. that is the easy part, when you render from ae, click the render settings and set the frame rate to 29.97 and pulldown (any will do). that footage will now be 29.97, and you can take it into a 29.97 project to edit with your other 29.97 footage.
the next time you try 24p, keep two things in mind that you would like to stay 24p through out the process and you never, ever, want to edit with a pulldown…. so, at capture, make sure to remove the pulldown, edit and effect it all as 24p (no pulldown) and wait until the very end, right up until it needs to go to tape, to add the pulldown to get it to broadcast frame rates.
you also might want to consider 30p for broadcast work if you can shoot it… it has the benefits of progressive frames for effecting, the filmy look of 24p and it’s already at broadcast frame rates so you’ll never need to add a pulldown and interlacing to your beautiful progressive frames.

how about exporting the audio only from the prject as a wave (file>export>wave…) then rendering the video only, and then laying the audio in premiere (i think you said you had premiere??).
hmmm… how did you cvonvert you mp3s, it wasn’t in ae was it? because that would create the same problems you had before…

[espinoza] “it does now work with multi-proc off… does that mean i need more ram?”
that may mean you need more ram, 1gb per processor is recommended but the prefered amount is 2gb per processor, so around 16gb for your system…
[espinoza] “and then to remember to turn on MP for renders, because that is a huge speed boost.”
that’s interesting, it is my under standing that it is the same render engines… i don’t know why it would work for rendering a final render but not for a preview render… i would post on the adobe after effects forum, and see what they have to say about that.
when you enable mp, how many extra processors does ae say it will be using (it should tell you in the window below the setting)? with 4gb of ram i would imagine it is only 1 or 2 more processors, unless you set the ram cache very low or the disk cache very high… which could possibly be part of the problem….
[espinoza] “am thinking about asking for nucleo at work, any thoughts on that…”
nucleo pro work similar to ae’s multiprocessing, by creating multiple render engines for each processor, but it has some advantages… primarily it can be set up to render in the back ground allowing you to continue to work on a project. which sounds pretty cool. it will also want about 2gb per processor (not in addition to ae’s requirements).
[espinoza] “do you think this is a software issue (bug) or memory…
it shouldnt just choke on frame 1 during a ram preview though…”this is the first time i’ve heard of this problem… so it’s hard to tell. you can run the disk utility on your startup drive to check for problems. you could also start-up from the osx install disk that came with the system and hold the ‘d’ key to bring up the hardware test. run the extended test to test all of the ram to amke sure there isn’t a problem with a ram module (note, this will take a while).

i fyou select the audio layer in the timeline then option-select (mac… ctrl-click windows maybe???) and drag the new audio from the project window onto the timeline it should replace the old layer with the new one keeping all the settings, effect, keyframes, etc.

ae can’t render in the background… nucleo pro can do that, but it would need multiple processors to do so…
i think i’d reboot, then check the cpu activity and see what’s happening prior to opening ae… if it seem to be fine, then try opening that project and rendering again…
if you still have probelms, i would start looking at some setting… disable opengl in the preview preferences, set memory and cache to original settings, disable multiprocessing (if you have cs3 and multiple processors). you could just try trashing the preference file (search for a file called ‘adobe after effects 8.0 preference’).

if the audio track you are using in the comp is a mp3, convert it to a wave or aiff, then import in to ae and replace the mp3 with the new track… ae has problems rendering mp3s.
if it’s not an mp3 problem, it may be a sample rate issue. make sure all the audio has the same rate, and the rendered audio matches that rate too.

ae won’t choke on large file size… it only needs to load one frame at a time.
it will choke on interfame compression. with this compression ae has to load more than one frame to generate the one frame it needs to ‘effect’. and that is the slow down…. it has to composite a single frame from multiple frames, then composite the other layers and effects that you have on that frame… more work = longer render time.

photo jpeg is a common codec to convert your hdv to, if you can’t afford the disk space of losseless or uncompressed footage. it is lossey, but with a setting around the 90% range, it’s pretty good, and will save you some disk space.
