80% of my adjustment layers or smart object filters don’t have a mask attached to them. I might have a folder created where I’m target an element in the photo, say it’s a product shot of a smart phone. I place a vector mask on that folder isolating the phone, and then everything inside that folder is instantly masked. Of course there are times where I’ll feather an adjustment on a mask inside that folder structure.

Another example is that I masked something directly in the photo (mask in on the layer this time) and want to apply some adjustment layers to it. It’s a lot cleaner to use clipping masks to target that object because then the adjustments are automatically limited to their visible pixels. The end result..a bunch of masks that I probably don’t need.

And again, don’t get me wrong. My final files are littered with masks, but it’s a 20/80 ratio due to my workflow. When I watch Lynda.com tutorials I see the instructors clearing them away often slightly annoyed as well.

I was just hoping there was some little known way to change this preference or some type of plug-in to switch this behavior.

I would scan them. I don’t see any advantage in photographing them, unless they are ultra glossy and the scanner is reflecting its own light back and causing blown out reflections. Or if you don’t have access to a good scanner, meaning, your scanner isn’t picking up the nuanced tones in the photos and is making everything contrasty or something.

I did a ton of photographic copy work when I was in school and it can be highly technical. Scan if you can in my opinion.

I was bored at work so I spent a little time animating your still. I know AE can be a little confusing at first.

Here is a video of what I came up with:

I added a little rotational wiggle to the toy too; I think without it, it looks like the decals are spinning around but not the toy. The rotational wiggle is an ‘expression’ (little line of code) that is attached to the rotation parameter.

I collected the After Effects project and posted it here. You can dig into the project and see how I put it together. I of course don’t have access to your Illustrator file, so I had to hack up the screen grab you originally posted. So just use clean Illustrator assets instead of what I did. You should be able to see the principles of what’s occurring.
