I have three Canon HG10s. Sony Vegas 8 pro imports its AVCHD footage. Great cameras, has 30GB hard drive storage. JK

I agree with DSE. Additionally, in my experience you need Quad Core. (I have intel Q6600 chip, 4Gig memory) I can edit four tracks of AVCHD. Dual core is spotty, may work with single timeline AVCHD.

You did not state the speed of your computer. However, the minimum requirement for DV is somewhere around Pentium 2.8 MHz. I actually used Vegas with such computer. With dual core you can easily process HDV. jk

Coverting to CINEFORM for a slower computer also works, which method I also used. JK

I use Vegas 8 Pro. If Vegas Platinum handles AVCHD (which I think it does) I can share this:
You can flowlessly edit four streams of AVCHD directly, on a quad core (I have an Intel Q6600) without converting to some other format. If you have a dual core single stream may work. Forget it if you have a single core.
In other words, to convert AVCHD on the fly you need a FAST computer otherwise Vegas and/or the Computer system may quit.

Burn it as Blue Ray (not more than 4.7 GB) on Regular DVD-R (need Blue Ray Burner). Then you can play that on your Blue Ray player.
You can put 15-20 minutes Blue Ray HD on a DVD-R.

I used to have the “Vegas not responding” message. Since I switched to Quad Core computer (Intel Q6600), Vegas breazes through HDV, AVC HD, M2V etc.
I think Vegas chokes on slower computers because it can not decompress HDV, AVCHD fast enough. -
17.45 minutes is 4 GB using HDV ot DV. I am not sure about HDCAM.

17.45 minutes is about 4 GB. You may have some problem around that.

Make sure you have Vegas 8c.
I have 8c on both XP and Vista.
I have no problems editing practically any format specially MPG. With quad core I can even edit four streams of AVCHD.So, I am not sure what problems you have (maybe you need to explain the problems more carefully). But I am reporting that for me Vegas works with all formats you have mentioned.
