The workflow sounds pretty much dead on what I would do.

    a) ProCoder3 is going to be $500 as well.
    b) If you’re getting paid by a “client” then you’re not supposed to be using Academic versions of Avid software in the first place.

Copy and Paste doesn’t work the way you are likely thinking.

The method in Avid is to actually to pull the section you want to copy into the Source, then patch your tracks appropriately and then overwrite the section.

The quickest way to do that is…

Mark In/Out on the section you want to copy (enable necessary tracks)ALT+C to copy the section to the Clipboard and load into the Source
    Patch the tracks
    B to overwrite.

You could also do a CC effect across the top most video layer and clamp it “manually”

I don’t think the fact that they used a Mac is a factor, but more likely that Avid just won’t import .MOD file types. Can you convert the .mod file to QuickTime? (or worst case, have the client do that?)

I want to point out that button functions between Avid and FCP are not going to be the same. Up Arrow in FCP may advance to next cut, but Up Arrow in Avid is by default something else. It would be in your best interest while learning Avid to not try to drive it like FCP.

You can map your keyboard though in Avid to allow you to use the keyboard as habitually as you are used to

For example, map FF to the Up Arrow – this will advance you to the next cut using the same button you’re used to using in FCP for the same function, without entering Trim Mode as Jon warned

August 5, 2008 at 8:12 pm in reply to: The best way to organize your capture?

“The problem at the moment is the shoots are taken and roughly guided by a script. Once the footage is finished it given to the editor who captures the whole thing (yes i know) and cuts the footage up and then renames as he goes.

This becomes disastrous when the rough edit is then given to a professional editing company to add to and finish off! So of course there is no sync with what the producer has on his script and what the editor has captured and they spend too much time and money searching for the footage.

My first instinct was to get them to batch capture and label, which i will do unless there is an even better option. ”

So, what’s different about what your rough editor does and a traditional offline/online workflow where the sequence would be Decomposed by the Online facility and all material re-captured via Batch Capture?

I’m just not following exactly what the problem is. It should not matter at all what the clip names are as long as the Tape Names they were captured from were all unique and correct.

When you create a new project in MC, do you get the option to select 720p/24 HDV?

I did a project a while back that was 720p/24 HDV shot on the same JVC camera and MC wouldn’t digitize it over firewire, I was using MC2.8. I ended up purchasing HDVxDV (Mac Only I believe), connected the deck to that and captured. HDVxDV created .m2t files that I was then able to convert to QT files at DNx145 that I was then able to import into a 720p/24 (non-HDV) project in MC.

    [q]”I don’t know what the 50 or 60 means for starters”[/q]

It’s probably an indicator for PAL or NTSC.

Another question is… what format is the footage shot in? (ie, 720p/30, 720p/24, etc)

  • A couple of good dupe houses here in Boston will take your Master and then they can spit it out in whatever other formats you need. They’ll even ship the deliverables with no rush charges applied!
