Mike, why should he disable the auto ripple after using it for this? I’ve got mine enabled all the time but if there is some potential headache that it can create I’d like to know.

  • Ed, I’m sure it must be staring me in the face but I don’t see any email links, so I’ll reply on the forum.

Like I told Leslie above, I’m not sure I’ll be needing a calculator much after I finish dividing up 15 two hour avi files that are 8mm analog video captures. But when you need to add or subtract time code it is nice to have.

I’ve been using this free calculator https://www.mediachance.com/dvdlab/freetime.htm. Using a standalone calculator is fine except that it doesn’t stay on top of the Vegas window so I have to repeatedly click on it to keep using it. So some kind of calculator that either is a Vegas tear off menu or is standalone with an always on top function would be nice.

  • Leslie, I have about 30 hours of old 8mm analog family tape that I’m transferring to digital. I want to archive on minidv tape and then do some different collections on dvd.

The 8mm tapes are 2 hours, the minidv are 1 hour. The scene capture feature doesn’t work for the analog tapes so I have fifteen two hour avi files. I’ve gone through and manually noted the timecode for each scene (I have Vegas Movie Studio, not Pro, no EDL function) and now I’m trying to break them up into suitable chunks of less than 60 minutes. I’ve found the calculator helpful for figuring that out but once I’ve done this I’m not sure I’ll need it much anymore.

I’m pretty new at this so there may be more efficient methods to do what I’m doing, my method is slow but not too complicated.

That’s the one. They come preformatted with FAT32 file format so they can work on Win and Mac. If you’re using Windows and you want to put files bigger than 4gb on them you have to reformat to NTFS file format. Instructions for that are included in the box.

Rick I have been using a Western Digital MyBook essential (USB only) external drive for a Vegas project for about a month now. I have Vegas installed on two computers and carry the drive back and forth between them. No problems at all. I got it for $99 at Staples when it was on sale.

Ed, thanks for taking the time to educate so many of us.

    Ed,

Will small reductions in bit rate generate losses that are hard to detect by an uneducated eye on a standard NTSC television? If so, at what percentage of bitrate reduction would quality loss be obvious? Obviously you can’t give a precise number for all situations but can you give some kind of ball park estimate?

In my current project, which will contain about 20 hours of minidv tape, being able to put say 75 min on a disc instead of 60 would be a help if the quality remained essentially unchanged.

  • David, I see what you and Douglas are saying now. Funny how your mind gets locked into one thing and prevents you from seeing it differently.

    Thanks.

  • Douglas,

If I float the windows they will be covering parts of the timeline, no? I know this is one solution but I was hoping to be able to dock the floating windows beside the timeline so that its width is reduced, giving me full view of both the timeline and the window.

My understanding from reading is that only the lower portion of the Vegas screen is able to dock windows. Did I read correctly or have I missed something? (missing something is so easy to do with a program this complex and a relatively new user.)

If I can’t dock the windows in the upper portion of the screen I’ll go ahead and follow your suggestion but I asked the question to make sure there was no other solution.

By the way Douglas, I’ve ordered your new Vegas 8 book so I don’t have to be such a nuisance here…

Danny, I hadn’t considered the direct recording. My mom is 82 and it will probably be easier to take a dvd to her than to get her over to my house but I’ll have to see what’s possible. Unfortunately I don’t have a laptop that I could take with me. Thanks for replying.
