Brian, sorry, I was going off my memory. It’s Ctrl F, not Ctrl M.

    Brian,

I’m not much past noob with Vegas but I had the same problem as you. I was always getting overlapping events or fading events when I just wanted to move events and I couldn’t figure out why I was getting those various results.

Here is what I do now to avoid those problems. Choose the event(s) you want to move and cut them from the timeline with the scissors icon. Do Ctrl M to ripple the subsequent events, this eliminates the blank space the cut command produced.

Now move your timeline cursor to the spot you want the excised event(s) to start; this can’t be in the middle of an event, it has to be where two separate events meet. If you want to place the excised event in the middle of another event then put your timeline cursor where you want that to happen and hit the S key, this will cut the event into two new events where the cursor is sitting.

When you have the cursor where you want it, go to the Edit menu and choose “Paste insert”. The event(s) you originally cut will be inserted at that point and all of the events beyond it on the timeline will be moved to make room for it. You will have no blank spaces in the timeline, no fading events and no events on top of events.

Rob, I hadn’t thought about the keyframes since so far I haven’t really used them, but your explanation makes sense. I’ll check it out. Thanks for taking the time to help.

Laszlo, thanks for the reply. I couldn’t think of any way it would be possible, but people do things with video all the time that I wouldn’t have thought possible so I thought I should ask.

DSE, I have an Intel Q6600 quad core with 4 gb of RAM running XP Pro. I do have the release media preference selected, I also have Zone Alarm Internet Security Suite running. The problem is, this is a computer with an always on DSL connection. I’ll look into how I can deactivate the connection while I’m working.

As always, thanks for taking such an active role on this forum and sharing your knowledge and experience.

DSE, are you saying that when you did the Zappa video Topaz was not available but now it is? I went to the website (www.topazlabs.com) but didn’t see anything for Vegas, only for Adobe After Effects. Did I misunderstand, or not know where to look?

  • The sound is more percussive, he’s quickly hitting a metal spoon on the plastic tray of the high chair.

I’ll try both methods suggested and see how it works.

As always, thanks for the help. These forums are an amazing resource for the clueless.

  • Andrea, did you register the software when it was installed? If you don’t register it will deactivate after a set time period, I seem to recall 30 days but I’m not sure. If you didn’t register and that time had expired perhaps that is what happened.

  • Steve, what problems does Neat Video have? I’ve used the NV free download and it did a great job on some grainy film transfers I’m getting ready. I am planning on buying the full version soon.
