    Hello Vegas people,

They say a picture worth a…

I figured I would send a link and maybe get some suggestions on this video. It’s worth the work as it has two Beatles working together after they split, namely Lennon/Harrison! This footage was stored for about 20+ years on 3/4″ u-matic. It has several issues with framing, speed, drop-outs, and the film changes color in the middle! from the capture shots, you can see how there is some terrible noise in parts of the video, I guess because of poor lighting. It looks over-sharp in some areas, and then some scenes don’t look like this. Any suggestions on how to tackle the issues of:

    Noise in the picture
best way to color correct this mess
    fix some of the drop-outs

I have hope I can restore this thing!

    Thanks so much

Noise can easily be fixed to a restored level if this is the worst it is. It’s not going to look like tight DV if you’re looking for a “brand new” kind of look, but it can be made more consistent.

    Color correction? No sweat.

If those black frames such as 933703 area drop out, the length of those dropouts is important to know, but again, fairly easy to make imperceptable.

You’re gonna be stuck on the framing to a degree, unless you choose to convert it from 4:3 to a wide format, which in itself will offer a few benefits.

All that said…what matters most is the content. It’s old, so folks expect some degree of deterioration. It’s old, so no one will notice some slight re-edits, particularly if it’s never been seen before. We restored similarly damaged footage of Zappa a while back for Ike Egan, it came out very nicely. Had Topaz been available, I’d probably have tried upscaling it to 720p or even 1080p before working on clean up. You might consider the same.
How did you capture this footage?

    Douglas,

This capture was done from a DVD(stand-alone) made off the 3/4″ tape over 5 years ago. The original tape is now un-playable :O(

Are you saying Vegas has the tools to make this type of video noise better? I tried Gaus Blur, and it just won’t work. Even the slightest setting on this takes all the life out of the picture. From what I have seen, Vegas has no video noise reduction, and the sharpness control is only for increasing? I tried using Tmpge for noise reduction but it caused artifacting.

Any specific suggestions on the drop-outs you see? they vary throughout the tape. Too many to do frame by frame, so if there is something that can recognize a drop-out and remove it, I would love to have it.
    Thanks for taking the time!

DSE, are you saying that when you did the Zappa video Topaz was not available but now it is? I went to the website (www.topazlabs.com) but didn’t see anything for Vegas, only for Adobe After Effects. Did I misunderstand, or not know where to look?
