I am using Movie Studio Platinum 8 to edit some 8mm film to video transfers. I’ve mostly used the Color Corrector and Brightness Contrast FX to adjust some of the faded excerpts.

I’ve noticed that in a single event, which I’ve trimmed so the color and brightness variations are minimal, when I place the cursor anywhere but at the very beginning of the event and then apply the FX the correction parameters don’t stay constant.

For example, if I have an event with a blue cast and the cursor is in the middle of the event, I drag the color corrector FX into the event and use the eyedroppers to correct the color cast. Where the cursor is the color looks much better but when I play back the entire event the beginning will still have a blue cast. And if I open the Color Corrector window while I play the event I can see the parameters moving from almost no correction at the event beginning to the desired correction once it reaches the mid point where the cursor was when the correction was made.

But, if I put the cursor at the beginning of the event and make the color corrections the parameters stay constant throughout the event.

I’ve read the docs about applying Video FX to an event and they don’t say where the cursor should be for event level video FX application; they make it sound like the FX by default apply uniformly to the entire event. Why are the parameters changing when the cursor isn’t at the beginning of the event?

Hi Kent, I don’t have Movie Studio Platinum 8, but if it’s anything like Vegas, it sounds like you have inadvertently created keyframes. Open up the effect in question, are there little diamond shapes at the bottom of that window, in various places on the mini timeline? If so, then you’ve created keyframes. If you want the effect to be constant, ie. not morphing over time, you have to go to the frame where you like the effect, and copy that diamond to the very first diamond in that window and delete all other keyframes. If you follow what I mean? If you want the effect to be at a certain frame and onwards, you’ll have to slice the video at that point, to the point where you want the effect to end. Or keyframe in the action “Reset to None”. Both accomplish the same task. Not all effects have the “Reset to None” option though. Like I said, I’m not certain this applies to Movie Studio, if it doesn’t, disregard this. But this sounds like what’s going on, in your situation. Hope it helps?

Rob, I hadn’t thought about the keyframes since so far I haven’t really used them, but your explanation makes sense. I’ll check it out. Thanks for taking the time to help.
