I’m nearing the completion of my documentary, and have made a few test dvds to monitor quality. Naturally, more and more of the dvd space is used, however, the film is 1hr 30mins long and an hour almost fills the entire dvd. I use Pro and am curious, when I go to render the finished film, will it adjust to fit on the entire dvd or will I need to adjust the settings to compress it to fit? If I need to adjust settings, what should I do?

    Thanks!

You need to change the bitrate when rendering the MPEG2 file to be appropriate for the length of your video. In your case, all tests so far have been small enough at the default bitrate. 1.5 hours requires reducing the bitrate slightly from default. I have a couple newsletter articles about this process. Look particularly at Vol 1 #7.

    Ed,

Will small reductions in bit rate generate losses that are hard to detect by an uneducated eye on a standard NTSC television? If so, at what percentage of bitrate reduction would quality loss be obvious? Obviously you can’t give a precise number for all situations but can you give some kind of ball park estimate?

In my current project, which will contain about 20 hours of minidv tape, being able to put say 75 min on a disc instead of 60 would be a help if the quality remained essentially unchanged.

I see no real issues with going up to 2 hours on a DVD. Give it a shot and test it with YOUR eyes. I’m betting you’ll be happy with the results. For 2 hours, I use an average bit-rate of 4,825,000.

Ed, thanks for taking the time to educate so many of us.
