  • How can I customize the Vegas screen best for a widescreen monitor?

I have a new 24″ Dell 2408 widescreen monitor that is replacing my 19″ Dell 1905. I’d like to better use the width of this screen by reducing the width of the Vegas timeline/track area and docking some of the floating windows beside it. As it is now the timeline/track portion occupying the complete width of the display is more than I need.

I’ve read the help files and it seems like this is not possible, that only the lower portion of the Vegas display is customizable. Have I read correctly?

If I can’t do this, how do you have Vegas laid out on your widescreen to best use all of that real estate?

Tear off the docking windows, place them where you’d liek them.

    Douglas,

If I float the windows they will be covering parts of the timeline, no? I know this is one solution but I was hoping to be able to dock the floating windows beside the timeline so that its width is reduced, giving me full view of both the timeline and the window.

My understanding from reading is that only the lower portion of the Vegas screen is able to dock windows. Did I read correctly or have I missed something? (missing something is so easy to do with a program this complex and a relatively new user.)

If I can’t dock the windows in the upper portion of the screen I’ll go ahead and follow your suggestion but I asked the question to make sure there was no other solution.

By the way Douglas, I’ve ordered your new Vegas 8 book so I don’t have to be such a nuisance here…

I have the 24″ Dell at home and I just have the timeline take up the entire width, but that’s my preference. I think what Douglas is suggesting is that you undock the things you want to place next to the timeline, then make the entire vegas window shorter, and place the floating windows wherever you would want them. The floating windows will still stay on top while you’re working in Vegas. I guess the best way to describe it is like how Macs work. You’ve got a bunch of single floating windows placed wherever you want with your desktop behind them, as opposed to everything being layed out just within the application’s window.

You know now that I describe that, it does sound a lot better than the way I do it now. The only problem is I don’t have the 24″ at work so it would be difficult switching between two completely different layouts.

David, I see what you and Douglas are saying now. Funny how your mind gets locked into one thing and prevents you from seeing it differently.

    Thanks.
