  • Are there any time code calculators that plug in to Vegas?

I’ve been using a standalone time code calculator but it would be nice to have a plug in one that has a tear off window so I can leave it on top of the application all the time.

Do they exist? Are there any free or cheap ones that aren’t part of a larger, more expensive package?

    curiosity….

what do you use it for?

before nle i used to have a hand held one which i used in our online suite when working with 1″, etc., but even that was generally for simple stuff like totalling edit durations, and the like….

Kent, I don’t know of one that already exists. Doesn’t mean one can’t be created. Send me an e-mail and we can discuss what it might take.

Leslie, I have about 30 hours of old 8mm analog family tape that I’m transferring to digital. I want to archive on minidv tape and then do some different collections on dvd.

The 8mm tapes are 2 hours, the minidv are 1 hour. The scene capture feature doesn’t work for the analog tapes so I have fifteen two hour avi files. I’ve gone through and manually noted the timecode for each scene (I have Vegas Movie Studio, not Pro, no EDL function) and now I’m trying to break them up into suitable chunks of less than 60 minutes. I’ve found the calculator helpful for figuring that out but once I’ve done this I’m not sure I’ll need it much anymore.

I’m pretty new at this so there may be more efficient methods to do what I’m doing, my method is slow but not too complicated.

Ed, I’m sure it must be staring me in the face but I don’t see any email links, so I’ll reply on the forum.

Like I told Leslie above, I’m not sure I’ll be needing a calculator much after I finish dividing up 15 two hour avi files that are 8mm analog video captures. But when you need to add or subtract time code it is nice to have.

I’ve been using this free calculator https://www.mediachance.com/dvdlab/freetime.htm. Using a standalone calculator is fine except that it doesn’t stay on top of the Vegas window so I have to repeatedly click on it to keep using it. So some kind of calculator that either is a Vegas tear off menu or is standalone with an always on top function would be nice.

    hi kent,

    now i see what you’re talking about….

    good luck.

i would invest in vegas pro, which not only has tc, sub-clips, and a host of other time code based options, but also media manager.

i think for your requirements media manager would be perfect, though i do stand to be corrected since i don’t use it myself.
