shifting the project over
how would i shift my project over if i wanted to add something in the begining?

You could go to “Insert” and then “time” and choose the amount of time you want to insert (I think those are right as I am not in front of Vegas at the moment) or you could highlight your events (select all of them by drawing a box around all of your events) and press the “g” key and drag them to the right for the allotted amount of time. If you want to ungroup them afterwards just press the “u” key.

#2. Enable the Auto Ripple feature. It should be a toolbar icon. Make sure to disable it afterwards. -
Mike, why should he disable the auto ripple after using it for this? I’ve got mine enabled all the time but if there is some potential headache that it can create I’d like to know.

By leaving it on (and assuming you are used to having it off) it can cause one of those head scratching moments where you go “huh?”. Also, sometimes you don’t always want everything to shift when you drag something to the timeline. I think it is just a word of caution so that 10 minutes into editing he won’t look back at the timeline and see things all out of place due to him leaving ripple on.

Jeremy is correct.
After having a number of students say “what the **** happened to my timeline” (and having to spend time fixing their mistakes), it’s disabled and I don’t bother telling them about it 🙂 -
Oh yea! 😉 Turn it off when you’re done with the move. More than once I forgot to turn it off and then inserted a couple of text boxes. All the others down the road shifted also and my script I keep was 3 to 10 seconds off. I had to go back and fix it all. Wasted hours because I forgot to push a button!
Lot of times I have to cut a 3 second portion of the video out, then shift the entire project over. That ripple cut does it. But then when I put in a shirt dissolve everything shifted and I didn’t want it to.
Many reasons NOT to leave it on depending on what you’re doing.
