Okay, thanks John. So, how do I make the soft-edged oval? In Pan/Crop I see a freehand point plotter, but no standard shapes. Am I looking in the wrong place?

Hey Jim–

I’ve had similar problems (but not specific to your Canon 5D Mark II). No clue why, but I found a solution by just running the WAV file through a freebie audio app (like dbPowerAmp) or Levelizer and just outputting a new WAV file (changing nothing).

I guessed in my case that Vegas just didn’t like whatever flavor was the initial WAV file.

Hey John, that’s part of what I don’t understand– it’s not IN project media, never put on the timeline, and was never imported to project media; simply previewed in the trimmer from Explorer.

I’m sure I can do it in Explorer with Vegas closed, but they’re MXF files and wouldn’t be able to view them (that I know of).

Steve, where would I find that? Is it a flavor of MOV? I don’t see it as a selection.

Is there a way to output H264 straight from Vegas?

Hey Ferry, I just mean that I have a “keeper” folder on my drive with common elements I use from month to month that never change. For new projects I make a new folder, and within those I make a VEG that has some stuff from the “new” folder and some stuff from the “keeper” folder.

I guess Vegas didn’t like looking in both places and got confused somehow, but I don’t know why it would matter.

Also, I hit the lighting bolt thing and got rid of anything the project wasn’t actually using. That probably didn’t hurt, either.

And/or, I’d love to attend a one or two day live course with an expert (and maybe some other editors) and be able to just ask questions as they arise and be able to have a live person just show me a few things.

Hey Ted–

Aficionados will probably scoff at this, but I just bought a used Panasonic HVX200. Partly because I’ve been using a DVX100 for years, partly because I knew the guy who owned it (and took care of it) partly because I do so much fiddling with stuff in post anyway and partly because I got it for $1,200.

And… partly because I just wanted to be able to say “yes” if a client ever asked me if I could shoot HD.

Nobody’s asked me yet (it seems most people I know can’t tell the difference, or care, anyway), and my one frequent client who shoots everything in HD always has me downconverting to SD for his TV spots.

I can shoot HD now, though.

He offers live training sessions as well. Not a warm/fuzzy dude, but he seems to know his stuff.

Hey fellas–

I fixed the problem… all my main interview footage was MXF files from my P2 card. I took the AVI file + audio that Vegas had swapped for an MXF file and rendered a new sub-clip AVI. Then, I copied the music WAV from my “keepers” folder into my project folder, and used the one now sitting in the actual project folder.

Replaced the culprits with the new stuff, saved, crossed my fingers and re-opened and Bob’s your uncle.

Could it be that Vegas just had/has some trouble with MXF files sometimes?
