Activity Forums VEGAS Pro Squeeze (and general compression) question

  • Squeeze (and general compression) question

I’m sorry to ask this here, but I’ve posted a couple of times to the Sorenson Squeeze forum and have gotten no response…

I downloaded a “five star” MOV/H264 preset optimized for broadcast settings for TV stations from the shared presets Sorenson site.

A couple of questions about it (or, maybe about Squeeze in general):

    (1) The preset had no additional filters applied (just picture and audio compression settings), but when I imported it back into Vegas to double-check and compare it to the original file, the picture was nice and clean, but (a) the overall brightness was noticeably increased, (b) the baseline tone of -20db had moved to -16db and (c) audio sync was about two frames late relative to picture. Do you know why this would be so?

    and

    (2) After futzing for two days now, the one filter I applied that made color bars match almost perfectly between the original and the Squeezed version was a “brightness” filter of plus three units. This totally perplexes me, because with NO filters applied the added (undesirable) brightness was already too much, let alone ADDING brightness. Why would ADDING brightness DECREASE the overall brightness?

Any insights as to what’s happening with this would be greatly appreciated.

Also, I’m wondering– with bars and tone added to my files for spots anyway– if stations have what they need with that to make adjustments on their end if things “look” different than they should receiving the files. However, from the interactions I’ve had so far with (mostly very young, questionably experienced) station play-to-air folks, if they see picture and hear sound they tend to say, “Looks great”, but I really don’t trust that they’re seeing and hearing what they should be and have been crossing my fingers about this for awhile now.

Also (last thing), if any of you have a killer Squeeze 7 MOV/H264 preset for SD that’s proven to work for you, I’d love to borrow that!

    Thanks,

Wish i could help Kelly….Never used Sorenson Squeeze before.
Considered it in the past, but Vegas provides all my compression
    needs without any surprises.

Is there a way to output H264 straight from Vegas?

No, direct H264 Output is not available in Vegas.
But what i use instead of that is the Sony AVC format,
which has tons of templates and customization tweaks.

Steve, where would I find that? Is it a flavor of MOV? I don’t see it as a selection.

H264.mov is a last resort for broadcast. ExtremeReach distribution uses ProRes. If you have a PC you can submit uncompressed,mpeg2 or Avid DNX HD. H264.mov quicktime has huge, unreliable gamma issues that are hard if not impossible to correct. You best bet is to avoid it and use and alternative. There is no way to correct the gamma issues with filters but there is a way to come close if you have Quicktime Pro.
