Matthew Sonnenfeld: “2) Currently you are allowed to put one license of FCS3 on one desktop and one laptop using the same disc. Will you need to pay for this individually on each computer you put it on? i.e. a new licensing rules that effectively double the cost of FCPX and the other applications (should they still be forthcoming). How could this be remedied?

The answer can be found in the App Store T&C. The gist is an individual can install an application on all computers they own. Businesses/educational institutions can buy it per computer (i.e. install on one Mac and let multiple members of staff use it) or per person (i.e. one member of staff can install it on all computers they use).

Matthew Sonnenfeld: “3) What if your computer crashes or it needs to be reinstalled for any reason? Will apple have a system to make this possible?

You can re-download from the App Store whenever you want at the click of a button. The purchases you’ve made are attached to your ID, so it knows what you’ve bought and won’t try to charge you.

Matthew Sonnenfeld: “I’ve lost hundreds of dollars worth of music because my computer crashed and apple doesn’t let you re-download music that you’ve already purchased from the itunes store.

I’ve seen several people on forums say they’ve contacted Apple when their HDD has died, and in every case Apple has allowed them to re-download their purchases.

Matthew Sonnenfeld: “They seem to expect that you have Time Machine going and make it your responsibility to back up via hard drive (Which also may crash!), and if you don’t have it, too bad.

I don’t think they expect that. It’s simply not their jurisdiction whether you back up or not.

Zane Barker: “ProRes is only available with cretin versions of FCP

Now, there’s no need for that.

Terence Curren: “I looked at the big picture after NAB last year and theorized where they would go with FCP. Tonight I was proven right.

From the predictions of yours that I’ve seen — far from all of them, I’m sure — I don’t think you could say you’ve been proven right.

Colour management isn’t an iMovie feature. Nor is 4K. Same for sample-level audio editing. And something becoming simpler does not mean it’s become less pro.

Anyway, this was advertised as a “sneak peak”, so I wasn’t surprised that it left a lot of questions, and as has been said, none of us are in a position to draw proper conclusions yet.

Now for a little prediction of my own: does anyone think Apple might offer some of the features from Color, Motion, Soundtrack, Compressor, as well as some of the stuff they’ve left out from FCP7, as “extended features” you can download from the App Store as plug-ins? Along with third-party plug-ins (in exchange for a 30% cut)? I hope I don’t have to open FCP just to use Compressor though…

I think Apple will have missed a trick if the iPad isn’t heavily integrated.

The title had me expecting the opposite, but this has been the least hysterical FC conversation I’ve seen recently.

    A few (probably unnecessary) points:

Apple have obviously not lost interest in this market — they wouldn’t be making this much of a fuss if this was a dying product…

We’ve seen it described by people we know as “awesome” and jaw-dropping” — it’s certainly impressive to certain eyes…

If you’re worried those eyes are not yours, you’d have to be inclined to believe Apple have made an uncharacteristic misjudgement. They’ve chosen to premiere this at NAB. Do you think they’d do that for a product shifting massively away from the professional and towards the consumer?

I think there’s more reason to be opti- than pessi-mistic.

Open your H.264 MOV in MPEG Streamclip and click File > Save As > MP4.

I’m not sure if your questions have been answered via that Quicktime Developers link, but here are a few pieces for the puzzle…

24, 23.98, 23.976 and 24/1.001 can all mean the same thing, depending on who you’re talking to.

Quicktime as a player may well play video at a frame rate that syncs with the display refresh rate. If you have a 60Hz display attached, it may well speed up your 24/1.001 video to 24.

The route to Quicktime’s stated duration of 20.228 seconds would seem to be:
    20 seconds and 5 frames of video at 24fps = 485 frames
    485 x (24/1.001) = 20.228

Isn’t it just that Thunderbolt can carry and DisplayPort signal? It’s not its own protocol.

You don’t need the HDP2 if you have the LHi. LHi will output genuine progressive RGB over HDMI, converting YCbCr to RGB, 1080PsF to 1080p and 1080i50 to 720p50. (I have the Dreamcolor and LHi.)

Certain products by AJA and Matrox (I think) can feed the Dreamcolor with progressive RGB. Do a general Dreamcolor search and you’ll find the caveats.
