  • Rename .mov to .m4v or .mp4 ???

Posted by Jeremy Mayhew on March 18, 2011 at 1:25 pm

I’m a bit confused about something. I generally compress my videos with the H.264 codec in a .mov wrapper. A client is requesting I use “itunes settings” in MPEG Streamclip, which seems to have the .mp4 or .m4v extension depending on which settings you select in the application. He says it uses the H.264 codec.

I’m wondering if I can merely rename the extension in the finder, from .mov to .m4v or .mp4? It will be playing back from a FAT32 drive to a theater projector.

mov can not be renamed to mp4 or m4v.

mp4 and m4v can be interchanged.
mov has a different internal structure though.

If you encode as an .mp4 or m4v (same thing), you can rename the extension to other things (like .mov and .flv) and the respective players will handle them. It doesn’t work in reverse. 🙁

Open your H.264 MOV in MPEG Streamclip and click File > Save As > MP4.
