Given the iPad was clearly inspired by Star Trek, I wouldn’t be surprised if other retro 24th Century ideas like touch screens that beep have been considered. Lets hope that such poor ergonomics and annoying interfaces are not part of the future.

Audio DAWs have been decades ahead of video edit applications in designing proper ergonomic controllers. So far the video world has been stuck on the QWERTY keyboard, with a dabble in tablet and pen like Wacom. Touch screens have come and gone in the audio world as they are not very ergonomic, look dirty within minutes and would require that everyone buy new monitors. I don’t think so.

I’ve just been overcome with nostalgia for the old Lightworks controller. I still miss that old girl.

Lightworks did make an effort and borrowed the older Steenbeck controller and added buttons. When I talk about proper ergonomic controllers, I am referring to dSP and Fairlight who have consistently made fast ergonomic controllers that require absolute minimal mouse. Part of that is the sequence interface design.

Wow,looks like we’re going back to the days of the Ampex “ACE” Touchscreen edit controller from the late 80’s!

I think Apple will have missed a trick if the iPad isn’t heavily integrated.
