    1.
2 computers, 2 cards, 2 copies of picture ready and 2 firewire drives. DV codec should be available without FCP installed on these computers. If you ever step up to DVCPRO HD, you’ll need final cut installed. I’m not sure if DV50 is a codec provided with QT.

    2.
software will drive 1 card. some kona cards have two inputs, but you can only select one as the “in”.

    3.
if you record to a firewire drive, you just need a firewire cable. if you are recording to xsan or another san, then fiber is usually necessary.

a lot of people use this app with xsan because you can edit the material being recorded by PR while it is still recording. The way it works is that it records a video, audio and quicktime reference movie. the reference movie points at the video and audio files. you can open the reference movie in FCP (if you are able to share files between a record and edit computer) while the underlying video and audio are still recording. If you don’t need to edit while the file is still recording, then firewire drives are a great option.

there is a Yahoo Picture Ready group which you can post questions to. The proprietor of the co is very keen on making advancements to serve the news market. I don’t believe that gpi triggering is built in now, but it could probably be done. If you can’t find the yahoo group to sign up, shoot me an e-mail and I will forward it to Gallery. keith_koby@hotmail.com.

by the way, I use the program day in and day out and can recommend it.

Have you tried changing the Motion Filtering Quality to Fastest (linear) and re-rendering?

ctrl-click on the sequence, go to video processing, change Motion Filtering Quality from Normal to Fastest (linear).

Thanks. I got word from a friend at apple that there are minor modifications to all the apps. I’ve made disc images and put them on a firewire 800 drive. 2 stations down ~ 30 to go!

We see this too. If you or your editor insists on leaving other apps open while working, go into the prefs for each offensive app and turn off audio alarms.

July 14, 2006 at 3:42 pm in reply to: Average Salary?

Everything posted already is absolutely true. Even in NY, the freelance wage is all over the map depending on skills and demand.

Here’s the best way to figure out how much you personally should be making as a salaried full time editor:

Take YOUR average freelance wage and figure out how much you make per year based on that figure at 40 hrs per week. Subtract 25% to give you the salary you would make at a place with great benefits. Subtract 15% for a salary at a place with mediocre benefits.

Benefits are very important – consider medical, dental, how much paid vacation you’ll get, if the company has an education re-imbursment policy (so you can go take those shake classes you’ve been dieing to take), free trips to NAB, etc.

    Hope this helps,
    Keith

IIRC, Grant’s NAB e-mail mentioned something about it. Can’t find the e-mail now.

I wish the pro still had 4 analog audio i/os. I have another 4 channel beta sp around here that I want to put into service.

June 16, 2006 at 1:15 pm in reply to: Using KVM while capturing

In general, apps like FCP, After Effects and Motion will have a fit when they lose a connection to the monitor. So it depends what kind of KVM you are using.

In our edit rooms we have a Geffen DVI dual switcher. In order to use this switch and change while using these apps you need another little device called a display detective (I think) to fool the computer into thinking that a display is still connected. It should work with this device in the path. In the machine room in our facility, we have a larger kvm that does vga. I have no problem switching during capture with this switch. The computer thinks that a monitor is still attached even if it is not the active route.

I got the same support solution. I’ve installed 7.04 but I’m still having problems. The VH server is a mac mini G4 1.67 ghz (i think) with 512 mb of ram.

Did you find out how to fix this? I just ran into this problem. I thought that deleting the package files would fix the problem.

    kristian-

i checked the files and they appear to be correct. I also made a SD version and had the same results. I’ll send them off tomorrow.
